Default Project: 3/4 ton keepin it low ZJ

Scroll down for current as of 11/16

I'm back at my dads for the summer, and he's acquired alot of vehicles over the years, so naturally I need to build me a toy Part of the collection are 4 jeeps (3 grands, 1 cherokee) and an exploder with an 8.8. Hmmm, I think I'm onto something here. The cherokee is too rusty so I gotta use a grand. I Originally planned on doing a cheapo F>R coil swap, keep the stock control arms so it rides like total crap, do some trimming and smashing, then roll on 33's. But then I actually pulled my head from my ass, realized I'd be pissed within a month and would have to upgrade and redo everything, spending more $$. I may be cheap, but I'm not stupid and don't want to pay to boost it twice. So WTH, I'm going all out and linking it on both ends right from the start. Oh BTW, this is my first offroad toy build....and it's going to be a budget build to boot. I'm in my last year of college and it's not that I'm broke, but I have too many hobbies to waste money on. Good thing I can do some decent fab work. I refuse to buy kits for something I can fab much cheaper and have it work the same or better.

The Heep. 93 grand, 4.0 auto, NP 242, fubbard D35. Underneath is clean, no obvious exterior body cancer, interior is complete and just needs a decent cleaning. Overall pretty nice. Price: FREE. Well, technically all my dad has into it is the $$ he didn't get from not taking it for scrap.

The cherokee I'm stealing a HP D30 from. It's getting a low pinion D30 and will be sold as a runner. Fawk Wisconsin road salt and the resulting rusted...err I mean basically welded, bolts. Getting that out without just cutting everything sucked! I met this months blood loss quota in one day.

Dumb plastic cladding goes away.

I should rename this project: cancer ZJ.

Oh well, I wanted to do rock sliders anyways. I've got an idea of how I'm going to do them. Basically cut that rot out and weld in some beef.

bottom of the B pillar inside the rockers. I call that structural integrity.

Under the A pillar

I didn't buy cutoff disks, and I only had one, so I couldn't go nuts until tomorrow. Did a tiny bit of rear trimming before the disk got too small. When I get more disks it'll be time to start fabbing up a low profile bumper/integrated hitch, and hack off more rot. I think the fuel tank hangs down too low...that'll have to get addressed someday.

Pretty isn't it? Ok, not really. It's a stock, hacked up, bumper missing, crappy painted, blown up D35, ZJ. Don't worry not for long. My plans ALL changed when I found a decent deal on more then enough new, 3/4" thread heim joints to 4 link.

Plans are:

- rear double triangulated 4 linked Ferd 8.8, Lincoln locker
- front 3 link, HP D30, open for now
- 4.88 gears (maybe, haven't bought these quite yet as I need to find matching cheap ratios front AND back)
- ~35" tires. I've got some 33's I can rock for now
- slim bumpers that maximize approach angle. Up front I've got a nifty idea for an above average ZJ approach angle that won't leave the radiator exposed either....will have to see how it actually works out.

So there's my start. More to come in the next few weeks. First thing is to get my dads butt in gear and have him clear crap off the concrete so I don't have to roll in the dirt anymore!!!

A little bumper action that I started today. Still need to cut a passenger side mount and get the nuts welded in and such. Then weld a big plate underneath tying both sides together and doubling as a safety chain mount. And finally weld on some D links....you can never have too many pull points. It's a start and up pretty high so I like that.

Just sitting on there so it's nowhere level or squared up. Still need to do some chassis hacking on the right.

1/4" beef

Eh? Stick welded with 7014. Only have a baby Miller mig, which I wouldn't trust for this.

Sounds a lot like my build....er....unbuild. My ex. DD '93 V8 ZJ with 230k on it, I went the ultra-cheap path, front springs out back, JKS ACOS spacers (1/2 the money invested in the entire project, but worth it) lots of "trimming" and a freebie set of 33's. Then I added an Explorer 8.8 (welded of course) and a HP disco 30 (re-geared 4.11:1) out of an XJ for the front, threw in a Lock-Rite (the other 1/2 of the money...WAAY worth it) while I was at it.

Keep it cheap and beat with reckless abandon....

I build my stuff to get beat. I went down that road having nice showroom looking stuff...not worth it! But I still like to to look somewhat decent. Something like 75% function, %25 style.

Do your doors still open? You need some rock bashers.

It'll be relatively cheap, not as cheap as a coil swap but I'm shooting for around $1000. I'm pretty good at finding deals and can fab like a mofo. Plus I have other parts to sell to offset costs. This is how I figure it'll go:
-front and rear axles with gears, install kit and outer bearings/seals $300-350.
-Heims got for $100.
-front +3.5" coils from my buddy to use on the back $cheap
-front coils, max of $120 which are new ones
-shocks $200
-free 33" tires for now
-rims $50-75
-metal for fab $200...need to go to a place back home cause shit here by my dads is big $$$$
-misc $100

My doors still open better now than when it was a DD...the latches no longer need to work, the door is a "tight press fit" into the opening. No need for rock rails, the tubing would be worth more than the whole rig.

Do yourself a favor a buy a set of axle brackets for your swap, I salvaged my rear brackets off my original axle and I've had to straighten and re-weld them a couple times now, they just keep bending and tearing off....and not just at my welds either. The front brackets have held up better, but they are all bent, and one is about to tear.

Bringing this back from the dead. I proceeded to go broke with paying tuition and ran out of time which put this project off into the pickers, literally. Now I have a super expensive piece of paper saying I can put up with a bunch of BS. With that came a decent job in the Madison area so I dragged the turd out of the weeds and am at it again.

D30 was installed minus a trackbar and the 8.8 was were I ran out of money so it never got in. Doesn't matter now.....new plan.

(Don't mind the conduit for mockup)

Approximate specs for the rear. Will be pretty low, which will mean lots of hacking but thats cool.

Front axle, 79 F250 HP D44, has since been stripped.

Start of a flat bottom

Wanting boatsides + wisco rust = hacking

Frame will get platted. Ordered up poly bushings and Trail Gear 1.25" creeper joints for the rear. Lowers will be 2"x0.25" DOM. Front 3 link should remain about the same with the new axle. Am picking up some H2 rims. Stuff's going to start getting naughty once my parts and more metal arrives

Leaving this weekend for a 6 hour drive for an early turkey day with the wifes family. Then leaving Wednesday for turkey day with my family 3 hours away. That trip I'll be picking up 8' of 2"x0.25" DOM from where I use to always get my steel from and the D44 front axle. Then I can finally get stuff going again.

No, started another project.
Linky for that one
Stole 2 poly bushings I was going to use for the 4 link so I need to reorder those. This weekend I'll get the Jeep on it's own weight....hopefully.

Finally took the time yesterday and got the lowers done. This and the Exploder are going to be slow going until the beginning of 2011. Gotta get my snow machine ready to head out West in less then 2 weeks....and it's tore down to a bare chassis currently.

Lowers.....
