2wd to 4wd convertion ?

I am looking at buying a 1979 f100 it is 2wd. What will it take to make this truck 4wd and is it a good idea? I do already have a rear dana 60 a dana 44 out of a 1976 4wd f250 and divorced transfer case.

I know on a 3/4 ton there is a big difference in the frame as the 2wd is coils and the 4wd is leaf springs. The whole frame is different from the firewall forward, 2wd is a C channel where the 4wd is box all the way to the front. I guess the biggest difference would be going from twin I beam 2wd to either a leaf or coil front suspension. I would get someone with a 4wd and set the two side by side and measure/compare. That would be the best way to see all of the differences. I found it easier to buy a good rolling drivetrain and just put the 2wd body on it, but a 1/2 ton might be easier.

Buy a 4 whell drive chassi and put your body on it. Or go to fullsize bronco.com and look at there straight axle thread and set up an acount and you will get all kinds of info from there, by far a awsome website for fords.

you will have to get a 4wd transmission and a transfer case. but the other guys are right you could just switch the bodies.

Is the '76 front axle a closed knuckle? If so i would find a newer one.

If you want to convert the current chassis to 4x4 using leaf springs, i believe skymanufacturing still sell their reverse shackle kit, wich would net you 6" lift and a spring mounting point on the front that is a bolt in install.

If this were my truck, i would probably look for a 78-79 front axle out of a bronco or f150 to swap in using coils and radius arm off the same vehicle. Then it can be converted to 8 lug to match the rear.
