Default Should Jeeps destined for the U.S. be made in Italy?

Quote:
Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of Fiat SpA and Chrysler Group LLC, outlined plans Friday to build cars and SUVs for the Jeep and Alfa Romeo brands at a plant in Turin, Italy.
...........
More than half the vehicles will be sold in other markets, North America, in particular.
........
The impact on Chrysler was less clear, but the U.S. automaker will supply U.S.-built transmissions as well as V-6 engines from a Trenton plant for vehicles built in Italy but destined for North America.
From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20101127/...#ixzz16URwqkzw

Granted Jeep cars are just a lame exploitation of the Jeep brand, but is moving production to Italy just the first step in Fiat stealing the Jeep brand?

Makes sense. Ship a bunch of parts over seas to install them on a chassis and then ship the whole thing back. Can't go wrong.

Chrysler ownership:
UAW = 55%
Fiat = 20% (increasing to 35% if they hit performance goals)
US Treasury and unsecured lenders = 10%

Doesn't make much sense to me - just from a cost standpoint - unless they think they can get a better price from their European suppliers / manufacturing and it is a big enough savings to ship the assembled vehicles back here.

It doesn't bode well for quality - I've heard from a former Chrysler employee that they ran durability on the "new" Fiat 500, a Rover Mini and a Sebring. At the end of the durability testing (which the Mini and Sebring passed), the 500 was in bad shape - the doors were literally falling off.

When the word reached the Fiat executives, they basically said that the tests were "not representative of real world operation". Yetti may know more about this, but it looks like the Fiat 500 will bring back memories of motoring in old Fiats in the U.S. - or waiting for yours to be repaired.

Is it any worse for build quality than having stuff built at Jefferson North by UAW workers who slam 40s and smoke weed on their lunch breaks?

The plant in Italy was built in 1937....Chrysler TNAP was built in 2006.

Personally I think they should take all the "Jeep" brands and move them to Italy..and expand TNAP to be 100% solid axle, topless off road vehicles available with diesels, portals, and maybe heated seats for the Maserati crowd.

We should ship everything we buy in from foreign countries. and we should all sit at home and collect entitlement money. We should also send money to every other country in the world.
