from a mechanics stand point. For what it is worth.....

owned a 99 chevy 5.3 great drivetrain good power good ride

baught an 07 dodge. pulled great hemi's drink the fuel! drive train and suspension suck

Fords suck

I am back to driving a chevy with 240,00miles on it. with a 5.7 "R". I will always own a chevy.
the 5.3 is a nice balance of power and efficiency in a newer truck. The 6.0 like to drink fuel and perform like a 5.3.

In my opinion nothing pulls like a diesel and they get pretty good mileage as well. I just sold mine (only to get rid of payment) for 18k. It was a 2005 chevy crew cab 4x4 with the duramax. It had 93xxx on it. I had a 2000 2500 chevy with the 6.0 and it was decent but sucked the fuel. If you don't mind looking at trucks towards the top end of your price range I'm sure you can find a nice diesel.

had an 07 Silerado with 5.3 LTZ package 373 gears. towed my YJ good but got ok milage. 9-11 towing. it did like to downshift a lot on the hills in West Branch. had to leave it in 4th gear mostly and 3 grand on the tach to go 70-75mph.= gas guzzler
I now have an 2010 5.3 with the new 6speed auto trans. 342 gears. Towes my YJ a lot better and stays in 5th gear when I put it there. got 13-15mpg towing 19-20mpg when not. ( Highway)

towing with a 03 Dodge QC with the 4.7. It pulls pretty good when I turn off the OD. Pulls the 2K camper in the hill of TN and NC.
