Default This American Life "This Party Sucks"

You can listen to the episode here: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/

"A show for this year's midterm elections. Two best friends in Michigan, both political novices, get tired of yelling at their TVs and take matters into their own hands. They form a Tea Party chapter to effect political change. But when push comes to shove and they have to choose a candidate, their ideologies, their principles and their friendship explode. "

The first act is about the Wilson/Benishek running in Michigan. It's an interesting look at the Republican Party vs. the Tea Party.

Here's the breakdown:

Prologue.

Republican Bill Jerke, a very conservative former Colorado State Legislator known as a tax "enemy," has a surprising job this election season. He's going around to lots of different conservative groups and urging voters NOT to vote for three Colorado ballot initiatives that would cut state taxes so severely, they'd essentially strangle state government from here on out. Jerky says he appreciates the sentiment behind the ballot initiatives but says they simply go too far. It's a weird election year—it's not just the political parties fighting each other but it's also the parties fighting amongst themselves, trying to figure out what they stand for, what they want for the future and what's the best path to get there. (4 minutes)
Act One. Patriot Games.

Rich Carlson and Tom Swenor, two best friends in Michigan, got so fed up with the political process in the country, they decided to form their own Tea Party chapter in Petoskey, Michigan. But as election season revved up and push came to shove, Rich and Tom had very different ideas about how to advance a conservative agenda. In the end, their idealism, their jobs and their friendship have suffered the consequences. This American Life producer Ben Calhoun tells the story. (34 minutes)
Act Two. Mr. Hitt Goes To Washington.

Jack Hitt has spent the last two years watching the Obama administration lose the news cycle and war of soundbites to Republicans day after day. Watching the Democrats run away from issues like health care reform and middle class tax cuts, Hitt wonders if there is some secret long-term master plan the Democrats are deploying, or if they're just incompetent. He goes to a Democratic Party insider—Paul Begala—to try to understand what the thinking behind the last two years of Democratic messaging has been. (16 minutes)

I can tell you the Democratic Party's agenda: Fuck you voters, we are going to do what we feel best for you, not what you, the American citizen, wants.

Actually this sums up both parties. You just happen to agree with much of one side.

I believe the tea party is speaking for the people as it is just people tired of screaming at thier TV deceided to do something about it and so the tea party is here. The people elect the ones in Washington to do what the people want, maybe now they will listen or find themselves out of a job

Huh? I hope they repeal the piece of shit Obama care and start over. Try for real results like Tort reform and perhaps not letting some 26 year old punk be covered under daddy's health care plan because he's a "child". This nation is full of uneducated tit suckers who are to good to work at places they are qualified for like flipping burgers at Micky D's or cleaning toilets or digging ditches.

Yes, the Republicans were a disappointment last time around but compared to the two years of ObamaPelosi they look incredible.

The problem is that many of those burger flipping, toilet cleaning, ditch digging jobs don't offer health insurance. And it's not like they are covered for free. They have to pay the entire cost. The only benefit is that they get it at the group rate.

Guess they should have made better life decisions to put them into a position/job status that offered bennis but since they didn't I get to take care of them . . oh the joy!

Or they could search for a job they are qualified for that does off them . . or they couldn't just complain and hope someone does something for them.

Guys like Drew pretend to not agree with darwinism, unless you're talking about social darwinism.

Pretty much slick. I guess that guy should be job hunting instead of sipping coffee in the middle of the day.

Some of you people are amazing.Everybody has a place in society and without the burger flippers, ditch diggers or toilet cleaners your life would be alot more difficult.I don't know alot about the new health care plans, but I do know that what we have now does not work all that well.My wife has a 19yearold working for her,he is putting himself through college. He fell on his bike riding to work and peeled a good amount of skin off his arm.a few days later she told him he needed to go to the hospital,he replied with"I can not afford it",so does he not deserve to get medical attention because he flips burgers.Maybe you could think of Government health care as a way of thanking the people that do the jobs that you are too good to do instead of a handout.

If he's going to college then he should be under his parents healthcare. If not there is urgent care and it's about $100. I guess his arm is F'd cause he believes the hospital is the only way to go . . beats me, maybe I'll ask him.

There are lots of places that offer healthcare and a lot that offer it at 30 hours instead of 40. How do I know that you might ask well the answer is because I also put myself through college and had healthcare through work because I chose to get married and couldn't live of my dady's insurance any longer.

I guess if he didn't suck at riding a bike he wouldn't have to worry about it (that was me being amazing )

that's a great unicorn idea on paper...giving healthcare at a cheaper rate to underachievers funded out of the pocket books of those who worked harder, planned wiser, lived more realistically.

one thing I would really like to see is the government to collect all the money out there and distribute it equally to everyone. why? because those who didn't have anything before it will run out and blow it with nothing to show and end up broke again long before 1 year expires. then there will be people who take that money, invest, save and do smart things with it and make even more. where is the utopian answer when those who blew it start complaining again that they have nothing, and now we have nothing else to redistribute? not all, but the vast majority are in their respective situation because of personal choices or personal effort.

nobody in this country is poor, starving or without healthcare because I chose to go to college, working three jobs to do so, get degreed and obtain a nice career that provides be a very nice benefits package as part of my compensation. I know plenty of people the work jobs and pay for their own benefits. even worse I am now seeing the effects of colleagues that are losing the benefits they worked hard to obtain resulting from the fear of the oppressive and costly current government.

while I am a proponent for programs to help care for those whom physically cannot take care of themselves and the severely ill, I do not see why I need to support someone who simply doesn't feel like trying.

the first step is to make getting government aid more work than getting a job. the one thing you can rely on is that they choose to take the path of least resistance.

Why would he DESERVE it? why does he deserve me paying for his accident? It should not be my or any other tax payers responsibility to pay for his accident. His choices lead him there, plain and simple.
