Default f150 emissions

I have a 1987 f150 with a 5.8l in it. I have been told that my divertor valve is bad and that is what is causing it to run rough. First of all does this sound right? Also is this part if the emissions system along with the smog pump? And last is there any way to do away with all the emissions items? Can I change my carb? Or will I have to change a lot to get rid of all the emission items?
