Default AMC 20 Welding advice

I have heard that an AMC 20 can be a strong axle if the two part shafts are properly welded. Can anyone offer advice on doing this? Do you agree that they can become a strong axle?

It isn't the shafts that you weld. It is stitch welding the tubes to the housing that keeps them from spinning or pulling out. Even then, you still need to truss the housing to keep it from bending.

To fix the 2-piece shaft issue, buy an aftermarket 1-pc shaft kit. I recommend Moser.

Doing these things will meet or exceed D44 strength.

As an alternative, you can get a FSJ C20 that has none of the CJ unit's weaknesses. They have a much stronger housing with thicker tubes and factory-welded shafts (different design than CJ shafts). The FSJ C20 is a nice alternative if you have already invested $ in the form of gears, a case, or a locker in your CJ C20 because all the differential parts are interchangeable. You just swap it over. FSJ C20's are typically installed as a set in a CJ along with a 74-79 FSJ D44 front since they are the 6x5.5" bolt pattern.

If your talking about welding the hub to the axle shaft, i wouldnt recommend this. You change the metullurgical properties of the material by applying concentrated heat, it weekens it and you run the risk of breaking your tire completely off. I learned this first hand at silver lake when i stripped the key then had HOT ROD weld the hub. went back and tire came off. This was about 10 yrs ago. You must get an aftermarket one piece axle kit.
