2X4s aren't gonna break over a few kayaks. I mean its not like they build houses out of them or anything.

But dont worry, once I find my house, a proper jeep build will ensue and the wk will be retired to dd/towing/dunes duties. But for now I will have my fun with what is practical and comfortable. I will also put it up against anything that anybody is willing to drive 500 miles, wheel the piss out of it, and drive it home... Maybe I should sell my yakima basket and build a wooden rack to carry my spare tire in. That would work right? Then When I over load it and it comes apart on the freeway and a 2x4 ends up sticking out of the windsheild of the car behind me, it wont be my fault right? It will land on the guy that made the 2x4's and the guy who made the screws right????

Giving opinion is one thing, Belittling someone is another. Simple as that.

I wouldn't suggest you get rid of something to make something out of wood. If you have the ability to get something that is made in a factory, Good for you, Do it. If you can't afford the basket but can create it from some piece of wood and make it safe, Why not? I highly doubt that that will fall apart at 70 MPH. It looks very well built. Had it been like 2- 2x4's and a couple of nails, I could understand your concern. It's built solid by the looks of it. Keep in mind, I build things often with wood and have been part of Construction crews and Scenery/prop building teams for quite a while. I know shotty workmanship with I see it. This is not the case.

Also, do you make the same comments to people who ghetto fab things on thier truck with Metal? Half the guys on here that do fab things are NOT Professional. How do you know thier stuff won't fall off? I don't see you being a Jerk to them.

I say keep adding more wood to it, make nerf bars, body armor and a roll cage out of balsa wood and see if the truck floats. That way you won't even need the kayaks, you can literally go white water rafting without ever leaving the driver's seat. You could get some paddles and paddle out the window too to simulate real life kayaking.
Personally I don't see what's wrong with making this rack, if I saw this truck at Wal-Mart it probably wouldn't phase me at all. Any of you ever seen a pickup truck with a full roll bar made out of PVC pipe? That is hilarious.

Sova, buy the rack from ScOoTeR and use the jungle gym you bought to heat your trailer. It looks like what should be your wife's bike will fit under it fine.
At one point in time the tractors were driven on public roads. Shoot, the Vuck is driven on public roads.

If you looked at some of the trucks that are on public roads you would be shocked. There was a log truck pulled over here this spring during weight restrictions. There were loose U-bolts on 5 axles, a dime size hole in the air tank (1500 rpm min. to maintain 90 psi), Brakes were non functional on 4 axles, bad tires, etc. I guess a 75 ton truck isn't that dangerous.

Dreezys just pissed because your $2000 truck with wood rack is still less embarrassing than claiming to have a barely lifted IFS WK "rock crawler" with "rock lights".

Paint it black, call it done, go canoeing, have fun, drink beer.

for LC4X, big boat and bike, not really much sag. :)

The boat may be a bit far back, I might move it forward a little bit, but other than that, ready for a trip to TC tomorrow.

Accepted. You bring a good challenge. The mounds are about half way, are you busy this weekend? If not I will be in Holland the following weekend spending time with my son an gf so I wont be available. However I will be free again the following weekend. But for the record, bolt-on cherokee's are not far off from grocery getters as well. I look forward to going station wagon vs station wagon with you. I hope you dont mind body damage.

One more edit. If you do actually mean this and do show up, win or lose, I'll change my signature.

I'm not interested in splashing around in stinky mud puddles at the mounds. I'd be happy to meet you at Rock and Valley's some weekend.

Sorry, I dont know why I said the mounds. I have never desired to go there. I ment the badlands. That would be about half way and somewhere around 400 miles each way. No tow vehicles. Dont even bring a trailer. I'm near STL, and rarely in Holland. Also R&V is not far enough away from you.
