Default Rinker V170 Inboard/Outboard Ski Boat

I bought this boat from a friend five years ago as our first boat. We used it to ski, knee board, wake board, and tube a TON every summer since then. It has been great for us. We were so happy with it that the newer ski boat that we purchased is also a Rinker. So, the old Rinker needs to go.

Here are the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I have no desire to misrepresent the boat, so I will tell you EVERYTHING that I know about it.

The good:

The boat looks very good for its age. The hull is clean and shiny. The interior was redone the year before I bought it.

It has a 140 hp Mercruiser inboard/outboard that has popped my 215 pound body up on skis every time and pulls double tubes without a problem. I put a new carb and a new fuel pump on two years ago.

The EZ Loader trailer is awesome. It is a single axle trailer, so it is easy to move around when you need to. Best of all it is GALVANIZED which means to paint to peel and no rust. I was really tempted to put the old boat on the new trailer and keep this one.


The bad:

The boat has not gone easily into reverse since I bought it. It has not gotten too much worse over the past few years, but it would be an expensive repair to make perfect.

Towards the end of last season the button on the throttle handle that allows you to increase the throttle while remaining in neutral started to malfunction. I was told that the cable needs to be adjusted to resolve this but have not doen anything to fix it.

Two of the four cylinders have reduced compression. I do not have the numbers, but the reduced power has not interfered with skiing or tubing.

I broke the top of the starboard back-to-back seat. I have replaced it with a floor mounted Igloo cooler. I kept the seat as the upholstery is perfect and you are welcome to fix it and put it back in.

The port side back-to-back seat has a couple of small holes where my then 5 year-old daughter poked a stick through it. I did NOT throw her overboard. (But I wanted to...)

The carpet needs to be replaced. It is not horrible, but the rest of the boat looks WAY better than the carpet.

The fuel guage sender does not work. No biggie, I just kept it full.

The Ugly:

There are some fairly deep scratches on the starboard side from an time when someone did not secure it to the dock properly. They DID NOT buff out.

All-in-all, it would make a great first boat for someone. It has a few issues, but has been winterized properly every season, and stored indoors when not in the water and over the winters. You would never guess that it is a 1985 by looking at it. Asking $2000.

The boat is in my garage in Augusta. Shoot me a pm if you would like to come and see it. If you like what you see, I will drop it in the lake for a test drive for a non-refundable $25 deposit. It's not that I would not enjoy a boat ride with a fellow Jeeper, but I do not have time to launch the boat and store it again for every tire-kicker that stops by. Plus, gas has not been cheap for a long, long time.

Thanks, I've liked the SHO's. But I already have three vehicles. Plus four boats. I REALLY need to get rid of one.

Any information on exactly what it would take to fix the reverse? And is the forward affected also? Where are you located in Augusta, I drive through there twice daily. Please let me know I would love to check it out.

It is a cable that costs about 75 bucks. You may also need a new seal ($20 I think)when you drop thee lower unit off.
