Question 81 CJ5 Dana 30 NT front axle

this past weekend I busted two lockouts in 5 hours, they are the 5 bolt versions, are the 6 bolt hubs any better? I have a set of 6 bolts hubs ready to go (or my brother has already mounted them) but he says he cant get one to lock and the other to unlock is this a common problem? I understand breaking the first one, I was climbing a good sized bundy hill, the second one (same side) broke when I stopped at the bottom of another one.

The 6-bolt hubs are stronger, but that doesn't necessarily make crappy lockouts any stronger. I assume you're running the stock units?

yeah they were the stock units, got them switched to the 6 bolt unit and replaced the lockouts with some from Warn, will have to see how that goes, what's the cure?

That will yield an improvement, but the only "real" solution is a bigger front axle. One other option would be to run D44 outers on the D30.

You could also switch to drive flanges (CJ's did come with them from the factory, as well), but that *may* relocate your fuse. Given the choice of breaking a lockout, an axle u-joint, a ring & pinion, or the driveshaft u-joint, you want your fuse to to be the lockouts first, and then the driveshaft u-joint. Putting too much strength into the outers or the pinion yoke area will push the weak link to something that will cause more (and more expensive) damage and be unrepairable on the trail.

I'd say roll with the 6-bolt hubs with Warn lockouts and carry some stockers as spares in the even you blow one up. Stock lockouts can be had cheap and really are the smallest headache you can deal with on the trail, so don't complain too much about having to replace one.

I hear ya on that, cost me $5.00 total at Bundy to have someone find and DELIVER so I thought that was a GREAT deal. 10 minutes to fix and back to the trail. 9 minutes of that was getting the damn chrome hub off the busted lockout they fit allot tighter then. I agree with the "fuse" theory not bulking up to breaking more expensive parts. Thanks for the advice.
