Default Cruise control on Explorer

My cruise control has not worked consistently on my Explorer for 2 years now. Every once in a while, it will start working again, then the next day it won't. Anyone have an idea what to check? If I move the tilt steering around, sometimes I can get it to kick on. Is there a connection in there I should check?
Does anyone know a person who could fix it for me? I'm moving in a month or so, and a working cruise would be nice for the 4-hour one way drives I'll be doing back and forth next month.

Check your master brake cylinder, there'll be a sensor on the top/front.

This sensor is prone to going bad, and on occasion leaking. There is a huge recall going around about that part. There is 12V going to that sensor ALL the time, and since it's prone to leaking, alot of vehicles have literally bursted into flames. Even if it's sat for a week or more.

So if you haven't had it in, take it to the dealer for the recall work, they might even fix the problem. It's free work then

That will get you pretty much where all the wires are to inspect them if the recall work doesn't fix it, it's actually pretty easy to get in there. Wires might have even been rubbing on something and broken through the insulation.

What year/engine is it?

I agree with the above post, but had an additional thought.

Do you ever have any issues with the speedo?

If you're getting a bad signal from the VSS, the cruise will not work properly. I never had any issues with the speedo, but my cruise would surge like crazy when set, i had a loose connector on the axle, pluged it in tight and it went away

Oh I guess I should have added:

That sensor I mentioned is the ABS/Cruise control sensor. The cruise system works off of the ABS system.
