Default Buying a YZF-600R.. Opinions?

I have a chance to pick up a '98 Yamaha YZF600R. aka Thundercat. 26,000 miles. New tires, Yoshi pipe. slight scuff on one side. Needs a turn signal in the front. $1700.

I had an '89 Honda Hurricane 6 in college and was considering getting into a cruiser when my co-worker brought this up. He needs a better car, so I'd be helping him a lot, and the bike rides/runs great. Really smooth. Anybody have any input on these bikes? Horror stories? Fair price? I've been out of the bike scene for a while and I really wasn't that big in it when I had one.

I loved my 98 600r. Very smooth and comfortable riding bike! I would buy another in a second
