96 Chevy 6.5 diesel

I'm looking at a 96 Chevy 6.5 with 250,000 miles on it. Anyone have any experience with this motor? Guy wants $3000 for it. What's it worth?

durable engine, weak link is the FSD (Fuel System Driver). Little electronic box that is mounted on the side of the fuel injection pump. When it get hot it breaks down the electronics then becomes hard to start and stalls. Most people make or buy a harness extension and mount the FSD someplace under hood away from the heat. I have a 97, runs good, good mileage but won't keep up with Duramax 6.6L. Lots of info on web - I'd buy another one if it came along (like in a Blazer).

They're good engines for towing moderate loads but there are a few specific problems that can be fixed with after market parts. The experts on the 6.5 are the guys at
DieselPlace
. IMO unless the truck is in great shape $3k is too much and at that mileage it most likely doesn't have much life left in it. These aren't 500k mile motors like the cummins.
