Default 4.0 keeps stalling out at idle (1998 XJ)

1998 XJ 4.0 Automatic 108xxx miles

After mudding last Sat. my jeep (1998 xj) will start and idle fine but after I give it some gas it goes below idle and dies. I changes plugs, wire, cap and rotor today. I also checked for error codes using the key and holding the odomiter, it goes throught the 000000-999999 but then shows no codes. I was going to put in a new throttle position sensor today but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and could give some insight before I put more $$$ into the jeep.

edit: I also removed the cat today and the sensor behind it. the cat was shot and this problem existed before I removed the cat.

I took the jeep for a ride down the road and it would sputter and the RPM's would drop to around 1000 while driving about 30 MPH.

check for mud on the cps and around the throttle body, then check the IAC and TPS. As well as check header bolts for looseness as to not have any vacuum leaks.
