Written by an athiest, I could see why they would want to think they are smarter. The thought of blowing your own horn and making yourself more important than others and a good way to make the Christians look less intelligent.
I could say the same thing, religious people are smarter than athiests because we have the guy(God) who created everything available to us and will give wisdom to who ever asks.

Quote:
Religion is a cultural universal, and its practice is observed in every known human society. However, as I explain in earlier posts (Why do we believe in God? Part I, Part II), recent evolutionary psychological theories suggest that religiosity may not be an adaptation in itself but may be a byproduct of other evolved psychological mechanisms variously called the “animistic bias” or the “agency-detector mechanisms.”
I was tempted to stop reading at that point. That is the Exact same idea as a Christian trying to use the bible to prove God.

Quote:
it may therefore be reasonable to conclude that atheism may not be part of the universal human nature, and widespread practice of atheism may have been a recent product of Communism in the 20th century. So belief in higher powers is evolutionarily familiar and natural, and atheism is evolutionarily novel. The Hypothesis would therefore predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to be atheist than less intelligent individuals.
While this makes sense, it's scary. Are they effectively saying that more intelligent people are more prone to accept communistic ideas? That's Great.

But then you would have to prove God exists, or else you would be called a kook for believing in something you can not prove. Like Obama's birthplace.

I do not have to prove that God exists because I know that He does and He shows His existance to everybody daily, it just depends on who acknowledges His existance. You and other non believeing people would not and could not allow for the existance of God because that would make you just like the rest of us and that scares the crap out of you.
As far as Obama's birth place, who cares he 'll be out in 2012 and be known as the worst president in history

The big thing in this article is that is says the findings SUGGEST atheists have a TENDENCY to be more intelegent. Nowhere in the article is anything is listed as a fact, only hypothesis. This is the scientific method. An observence of information presented and a SUGGESTION as to why.

I didn't click.

Does it say because they don't believe in ferry tales, like talking snakes, virgin births and men who live 100's of years?

born and raised catholic...

nothing like being 4 years old being told your a sinner who is going to hell for sins you havent committed.

that being said i have not been to church since high school (catholic school) and dont plan on going anytime soon.

My finace and I went in to see about getting married in the perish close to our house and the priest there was such a fucking pompus fukc wad that i coulda punched him in the face. He suggested that we were getting married because she might be pregnant (she is not) and that we should wait untill the baby was born just to make sure it had "all its toes" (suggesting that people who have premarrital sex or sex out of wed-lock are more prone to have retarded babies). He then went on a little speel about the black community and how they are the problem with society today.

is all i heard for the next 20 mins and i just looked at pictures on the wall (being obviously uninterested).

That pretty much has been my experience with the "catholic" dogma since i can remember.

Scare tactics etc. are such a lame attempt/move to get anyone with any sort of brain to follow you.

I wanted to tell this fukc to his face that i once got a girl named Mary pregnant and gave her an abortion with a poopy candy cane. I walked out and am probably never going to go back.

I live with some sort of catholic guilt everyday due to being around the catholic "teachings" for so long. Some of that stuff gets (teachings of morality) stuck in your being, so i think i will for ever be a Recovering Catholic.

You can't prove that gods* don't exist, so logically you have to allow for the possibility that they do.

* use of plural and small "g" intentional.

It could just be me but that title kind of seems pretty undeniable.

I agree that it's only Suggested and not proven. I personally don't think Psychology is really worth much as a "Science" kind of thing.

Yes, your forgot to mention fairy-tales of matter being created from absolutely nothing (or it's eternal, the can't even agree on that), That the humans we interact with/love were started from goo, and that you and I are Accidents and really have no meaning in life.

I'm sorry you were treated that way by a priest. I'm not surprised at all though. My question is why, if you've been away from the church, did you go to a Priest to get married? Because it's the right thing to do? It sucks that he gave you a Crappy speech but his job is to Teach what ever Dogma he is part of. If what he said follows Catholic teaching then you can't complain when you go to him. It's his job. If you didn't want to hear it, Don't go to a Catholic priest.

^^^^ Serial killers have a tendency to be very intellegent but that does not make them good people. Why get bent out of shape over this article? If you believe in God then follow your beliefs regardless of what "intellegent" people (or even Mike Sova ) say.

Oh, I don't care. I'm just bored. Thinking about going to rent Shurlock Holmes.

I also don't usually care what other people say unless it's something they are saying wrong about my faith or the people in my faith.....Sometimes.

it doesn't prove anything.
pretty much all he's saying is people who are low income are less intelligent and their children are more likely to follow their beliefs.

and even if it is proven that religion is a genetic trait who's to say God had nothing to do with it? the bible says he created us so it is logical to assume he would make some sort of genetic trait for us to try to find him.

I think he is less intelligent for shoving his head up his ass than tootin his own horn.

i'm not an athiest but I am not a church goer. about an hour is all i can take of the "Good News" than its time for a smoke and walk to the truck.
