If your gonna drive that far then go to sliverlake or rocks and valleys. But there are good trails up there never the less, it would just make it worth the drive to go somewhere else up north. just my 2cents

The northwest and west coast of the state has by far some of the most beautiful areas IMO, besides the UP.

What kind of wheeling do you want to do?

In the LP, there are ORV areas in the Bull Gap/St. Helen area, Silver Lake State Park (lot of fun, but not difficult wheeling...just sand dunes) the Mounds in Mt. Morris, and a few others I'm probably forgetting.

Pretty much all of our public accessed land is very limited as far as any challenge and in my opinion you have to just appreciate it for the occasional scenic vistas on high bluffs overlooking river basins and remote lakes, etc.
Your closest from Chicago would be up the coast, hway31 north up thru Muskegon to the Russell road exit and then up into the national forest area north of Blue Lake.
I just checked out this area last weekend to see what all the trail closures were.
I'm not familiar with what good stuff had been cut off, but there is still plenty of spots for scenery, especially after it greens up some.
As a general guide, stick to the trails with the 4 digit posts in the NF, seasonal roads,
and on state land stick to the ORV routes(designated for full width), which are both rare and lame. Power/utility lines are off limits, as well as stream beds, marshes etc. Basically you stick to what granny could go down in 2wd in the Buick.
The Baldwin NF ranger station will have the maps detailing what's left there. You'll find they're pretty much meant to be a go along guide with another map, especially with no familiarity with the area, as there is not much detail.
The DNR site has maps of the state trails, and if heading into trails east of Baldwin, expect heavily whooped out, tiresome wheeling until you get a ways off 37.
Don't forget the Silver Lake sand dunes and private parks are popping up.

its pretty much illegal to wheel in michigan on state or federal land. if your just up for cruising the 2 tracks sightseeing, thats fine, but if you have to put it in 4 wheel drive, you'll get a ticket by the DNR. if your looking for wheeling fun, you'll have to check out some of the parks= silver lake sand dunes, rocks and valleys offroad park, twisted trails offroad park, the mounds, or turtle ridge on drummond island.

You'll have to go to one of the parks to get anything close to that.

Nothing like that is legal on public land. Only in designated parks as described above by others.

Hi Reflux
And welcome!
Baldwin is a Great area to two track and enjoy the outdoors, if you want to really challenge yourself go to one of the off road parks Twisted Trails, Rocks and Valleys, or Silver Lake, i am a long time wheeler born and raised in sourthern Michigan as a kid, then moved to northern michigan and remember when we used to be able to wheel all over, well that has changed alot over the past years, and locals like to send out of towners into trouble areas, not all but most!
So I suggest if you want to have some challenging terrain go to the parks if you are just doing family woods running get a map from the DNR and make sure you stay on the trails as marked! get a ORV sticker! And dont tear up the two tracks! (myself i find it best to stay right the hell out of the woods!)

Michigan is hungry for money and the tickets are tough, and theres alot more DNR than you think!
Good Luck!
JR
