Check out ADVrider.com

I'd like to get something a little bigger that's street legal out of the box. I'm thinking that I'd like something a little smaller than a 650, more like a DRZ400S that will still be lighter for the trails.

They are a good value, Great for the guy who rides mainly onroad and the ocasional 2-track / dirt rd. They are a little on the heavy side but have plenty of torque to compensate. 2008 + is the way to go (new body style) too many upgrades to list. I have a couple new 09's left on the floor i would sell for cost, i have the 10's coming in soon (same bike diff decals) pm me with any questions you have on these, ive sold them for years. My mechanic rides one He's worked here 27years and thats the bike he chose if that means anything. And since you said your a bigger guy anything smaller would probably feel underpowered and uncomfortable.

The KLR is pretty street/hard pack oriented. Depends on how you ride.

I wish they were similar... they share about 4 parts max. The KLR is 20X more popular than the KLX... if something major breaks I am SOL.
