Default 17 inch tires on 16.5 H1 rims?

I've seen this twice in different mags, and I've seen it on several sets of steel H1 wheels in government auctions.

Mostly 17 inch Wrangler MTRs, and I've also seen a set of 17 Krawlers, both mounted on 16.5 H1 beadlock rims.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what they are doing there. Are they just mounting them up and not worrying about the extra 1/4 inch all the way around because they are trail only? Or are they taking 1/4 inch plate and welding it to the rim to make the 17s fit?

Mounting a tire to a rim that is not the same size seems stupid to me, but if they are making it work, I want to know how. Anybody have any ideas? There are alot of great new tires in the 17 inch rim catergory, but the 16.5 is slowly becoming an orphan. It would be nice to broaden the range of tires for my Hummer rims.

Seems like a really stupid idea and that there is no way that it would work,
But I would like to see some pictures or proof of someone doing it, kind of curious.

I wouldn't say that there's no way... like he said.... it's only a 1/4" all the way around. There's still almost an inch of rubber there. I would think that getting the tire centered wild be the main concearn. Once you have everything locked down it won't move. Especially with a 12 or 24 (or 32??) bolt beadlocks. I wouldn't try it with the 8 bolt wheels though. They are constructed completely differently than the other ones.

I might try it if I can talk MiNiBeast into mounting 1 up for me..... after removing all the bolts and the rubber run-flats out of the tires. I might have to bribe him with something pretty big now that I think about it...... it would be about a 2 hour project for him.

Are you positive they are 16.5 H1 wheels? Stazworks and some others make 2 piece 17" wheels that look like H1 wheels.

If you want to see how close it is I have a 17" wheel'd tire not mounted. Just dont screw it up because it's a $400 tire.

I might take you up on that.

I wish I knew what issue it was, but there were two rock buggies in Petersons (same issue I think) running non-recentered stock 16.5 H1 rims. This was a few years ago. A guy a few months ago wrote their question section to ask how they did it, and Petersons just said they were trail only rigs but offered no specifics.

And a few months ago I saw a guy selling a bunch of 12 bolt H1 rims on ebay with old style 37x12.50x17 MTR's on them. I emailed him a couple of times to get more info but he never responded.

I tried to dig up a pic through google last night, but couldn't find one.

not to revive an old thread. but isn't the one side of the 16.5" tire the same mounting surface as the 17"? I was told this one time from a guy that mounted tires for a fair amount of his lifetime. That way they'd only be working with one side to essentially space to center...

Nope. Bead is totally different. The 16.5's are tapered like a semi tire and everything else is more square.

It's the night of the living thread!

Since I posted this I found (and bought a set) of 37 MTRs on H1 rims. Lo and behold they were available to the military only in 16.5.

Also, there are a few guys that have welded a small 1/4 spacer bead intp the rims. Not sure I'd do it, but trail only might be OK.
