Default 727 expert needed

I think I figured out whats wrong with the trans on my M880. the kid got it stuck almost vertical in the yard and finally backed out of it after it quit going forward up hill. I thought he smoked the forward pack but I proved that it worked by starting in low and up shifting to drive once its was rolling. so my question is this, if the trans is wounded and doesn't go forward in drive from a stop what do you think failed? low works in manual mode and drive works once rolling and up shifted manually. reverse works fine to.

I would PM Nosights.... He seems to know a ton about the old school dodge stuff. If he doesn't know, I'm sure that he'll be able to get an answer for you.

Does it move at all In drive? Is it like it is neutral or does it feel like its bound up?

What comes to mind:

1) You still may have a forward clutch issue, and the low gear is helping you get moving. Low gear is a combination of the front and rear planetary sets, low/reverse band is applied so the low-reverse drum stays stationary to hold the rear planet carrier.

2) or a severely stuck governor, but if that is the case it would/can effect reverse.

I still think the forward (or rear clutch as it is referred to in relation to the placement inside the trans) is still the culprit.

I was looking at my old books and I have a 904 diagram that shows the low band is not used in drive. instead it uses the one way clutch for low. so that might explain why I can launch in manual low and then jump to drive? could I have a blown one way clutch? I have seen it in Turbo 400's but never on anything else.

I have a 727 from a waggy that I am sitting on right now.... not sure if it will work in your dodge... but PM me if you're looking for a replacement.

Thanks for the info Mike. I dunno if it could work as I haven't done enough swapping of AMC vs Dodge parts? maybe someone on here might know like PP?

Amc and dodge cases are different. You would have to swap the guts. Depending on the years, the internals should be the same. If you are going to through all of that, you might as well rebuild yours or find a good running dodge unit.

hard to say? it was whining like a bitch when it first started acting up. sounded like a dry power steering pump. it quieted down a while later after sitting. I kinda figured it had something going like a huge pile of crap shifted and blocked the screen but the fact reverse worked made me question it.

might try www.steelsoldiers.com as M880s are popular there as are other MVs.
