Wow, I forgot I had a thread on here. Just a few updates since 2006.

I put in a 4.7 V8 from a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and kept my nv3550 and Atlas.

We pulled the dash and deleted some stock wiring.

Then put in a new dash that I haven't finished yet, but did manage to install heat over the winter. Plan is to cut in a CJ glove box and also add a CJ grab bar for the passenger. Sadly, those have been sitting for a year in wait..

One thing I forogt is that when we did the engine swap, I lopped off the front section of frame so I could redo the upper link mount and panhard on my front 3-link to make it handle better. I wanted the panhard to be longer and flatter than the last setup. I also wanted more uptravel.

It sits with a 20" belly and about 5" of uptravel. I ran the jeep over the summer at Drummond and Harlan and some back roads cruising.

This fall I did some tube fenders and inner fenders and then took it to Bundy and R&V.

Then this Winter we looped the back end of (again) and dove tailed it and did a CJ tailgate conversion. I also added some timbren bumps to the rear end. oh yeah, and reworked the lowers to make it dual triangulated and provide lower AS% numbers.

I've got to finish the inner fenders and make a cover for the fuel cell, which was sunken into the floor. But that's on hold as I work on another project.

That's pretty much where it sits right now. I'm guessing I'll be wheeling it this spring and summer with some 1/2 done rusty rear inner fenders until I get around to finishing them off.

Well, the short of it is my brother-in-law blew up his 4.0 the same week that a friend of mine told me that he had decided to scrap the idea of putting a 4.7 in his jeep in favor of a hemi. The friend already had the 4.7 and my brother in law needed a good 4.0, so I talked my wife into a plan of having my bro-in-law buy the 4.7 and I would put my 50,000 mile 4.0 in his jeep. Since my bro-in-law's jeep is still his DD, he needed to get back on the road quick and cheap.

Did you have to do anything extra to mate your tranny to the 4.7? I always thought the 4.7 or the 5.2 would be a pretty cool swap.

Weight and simplicity. With stripping the jeep down, I weighed in at 3900lbs when I weighed it.

I used a 94-99 V6 Dakota bell housing. The clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and inspection cover are from a 2002 Dakota 4.7 that mates up to a NV3500. I reused the clutch fork, throwout bearing, and external slave from my original 4.0/nv3550 setup.

Ok, looks like Round 7 of modification is happening. For the past two years JeepM715 and I have been racing an 88 Grand Wagoneer in the TREC C-class (stock) down at the Badlands. We have both become far more addicted than we ever thought when AlumCJ talked us into building something to race.

As the season was coming to a close, we decided we had pushed the Wagoneer as far as we wanted and started talking about building a new rig. After a few false starts, I talked JeepM715 into redoing my Wrangler. Hell, it's only been redone something like 6 times, what's one more?

Before making the jump, we poured over the current rules and competitor cars, as well as looking at the new Ultra4 Modified class rules. The TREC-B and Ultra4 Mode rules have a lot of overlap, and we think we can build a reasonable car that should allow us to race in either class. As 2012 schedules come out, it looks like we could possibly run TREC, the Ultra4 Regional series, and DirtRiot races as they've managed to not step on each others toes.

Big things we gotta address
1. I need more stock frame. Over the years I've chopped and rechopped my frame until there's maybe 1/3 of the original left. To fit U4mod, we need at least from engine mounts to behind the seats.

2. U4mod says no hydro steering.

3. I love manual transmissions, and even when going V8 I kept my manual. But after racing, I have been converted to wanting an auto trans, but with a manual shift kit. I also like my 4.7 V8; sure it was in the list of Top 10 dumbest engine swaps in JP magazine, but that engine revs like crazy and is fun for bumping ledges. But it's also more expensive than GM parts to upgrade.

4. Airshocks are great for trail riding, but we need more shock. One thing we learned in C-class with our V8 was that it was fun when you could use it, but with 10" travel shocks the time for WOT was limited. The desire to go faster is why we are in this mess. Sad part is U4mod limits to 14" travel; but that's a world of difference over 10".

5. Tires. U4mod allows DOT 37", TREC-B limits to 35". We'll wait until closer to the season start to buy some new tires, but the 39" iroks will be retired.

6. Safety. Hey, at least it made the top 10. Getting hurt sucks.

So here's where it started. My mostly completed dovetailed TJ. We were mid-project on the back end when I drove it to the barn 2 years ago and we moved on to the C-class Wag. Since then the TJ has been largely neglected, and it always made me sad when I walked in the barn. I hate seeing sad jeeps.

Here it was down at the Badlands before we put the rear corners on.

One common thing that JeepM715 and I have been doing for the past 4 years or so is "Jeep Night". One weeknight a week we get together after work at one of our homes and spend the evening working on whatever project we've got going at the time. It keeps projects moving along, and keeps wives happy. And as White Rhino says "happy wife, happy life."

So last Wednesday, JeepM715 was over and we were going over the plan. The solid points were a new to us GM 5.3 or 6.0 and TH-350 and reuse my Atlas 2 and axles.

My garage was in a strange state: clean and empty. So when AlumCj stopped by, we decided the best thing to do was blow apart the TJ based on half a plan -- exactly how every project starts. The TJ rolled into the garage at about 8pm.

By 11pm, it looked like this. This pic is from Saturday after a power wash, but we had lifted the cage, pulled the tub, and set the cage back in place. All the wires were disconnected, and its nearly ready to remove the drivetrain. Big thanks to AlumCj for the hand. We spent the next hour bench racing before calling it a night.

So over the past few days, we've been trying to firm up the plans. So far it looks like this.

- Sell a bunch of stuff so we have a "budget"
- Picked up a blasted and cleaned stock TJ frame over the weekend.
- 2006 6.0 LQ4 with cable throttle, all lined up and should have next week.
- 4L60E with Jeep t-case adapter, picked up over the weekend.
- Atlas 2 with 4.3 low-range, already mocked up on the trans.
- Dana 60s, 4.88 gears, detroit front, spool rear. Narrowed and setup for 5x5.5 wheels.
- PRP seats from the Wagoneer
- mild stretch over stock up front (2-3"), 3-link & panhard to work with the steering box
- stretch the rear to a wheelbase of somewhere around 110"
- air bumps up front, either reused timbrens out back or air bumps if we can swing it
- plenty of custom brackets from Motor City Machines

That's about it. 1st race of 2012 is March 31th.

Sounds like I'll need to have an open house when the new frame gets moved into the garage.

Yes. Current plan (changes quickly) is 2.5" 14" coilovers to go with class regs.

lovin it! 2.5" kings! so much for that budge build. lol. were like peas in a pod. im doing the exact same thing with the cruiser. it wont be dedicated to racing. but it will be able to run the b class and u4 modified when im done after a tire change.

where is the best price you have found for kings. im looking for 12" in rear and 14 fronts.
