Among the other features, the Raptor has internal bypass Fox shocks tested and valved specifically for the longer travel application with 1000's of miles of true test and tune to get to the final valve stacks. I've seen the Ford drawings for the Fox parts. For an out of the box truck, there's very little that can compete.

I found that online about 2 weeks after I bought my truck, definitely put a knot in my stomach. But, another thing that I didn't like about the Raptor is that they aren't offering the A plan pricing...that along with the rebates knocked 8k off of my truck. And I know people will say that yes, you can get the A/X/Z plan pricing on the Raptors because they talked to somebody who did, but you can't....if anybody can prove me otherwise, then I will eat my words. I had the financing and everything in order for a 2010 tuxedo black Raptor, and they weren't able to do the discount (and I was dealing with the manager, so it wasn't money out of his pocket...he wasn't trying to screw me)...I was at the point of signing the dotted line, but decided to go with the Lariat instead.

Oh well, I figured it will be no earlier than 2011 before the supercrew Raptor hits the road, and by then...I may have the itch to get something new again. Depending on the mileage and value of my current truck, I may make the swap then. I'm not going to go crazy modding this truck like I did on my past two just for this reason, that is money straight down the drain when you trade them in.

I have an 08 supercrew 60th anniv now, My current lease is up in march and from what i've been told Ford credit is no longer leasing the F series trucks. I like having something new every 24 months. And i've always got a 40-50k truck for in the $300/month range, i dont see that happening this time around Hopefully something changes by then, but i doubt it.. I wont be a fan of paying double what im used to from the previous 6 years. But it is what it is.

Default Update to my build

My build list so far (from front to back):

Trail Ready Pre Runner Front Bumper
Warn 12,000# winch
Roush Cold Air Intake
BullyDog Triple Gas Dog GT Tuner
Garmin Nuvi 765T GPS
CoverKing Neoprene Seat Covers
Eaton Limited Slip Front Differential w/ 4.56 gears
Rancho 4" Lift
Eaton Detroit TrueTrac Rear Differential w/ 4.56 gears
Fab Four Rear Bumper
Century Ultra Cap
Truck Vault Carpeted Drawer Storage System
Tire Gate Rear Tire Carrier
(5) Dick Cepek DC-1 Black 17" Wheels
(5) Cooper STT 35x12.50R17
Bushwacker Fender Flares

I haven't installed the upgrade from my tuner yet; I was waiting until my gearing was done so that I can calculate what tire size I need to program in to trick the speedo. I can tell you that when I went to the 35" tires my speedo was off by about 7% (when I was running 64mph according to the speedo, the GPS said I was doing 68mph). I have a feeling it's going to switch and go the other way (speedo saying 68mph and I'm actually doing 64 mph).

I pick it up from the shop tonight (just got the differentials done) and I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

I guess I should have known I was going to catch some flak about the comment about the Raptor not having anywhere near the features I was looking to have on my truck. I guess a better way to phrase it would have been to say that for what I'm trying to achieve, the Raptor isn't the ideal jumping off point. I paid $26K for my ford and have another $20K into it, which means that it's not about the money (I could have bought the Raptor and had $4K in my pocket).

The reasons I started with a regular cab short bed are as follows:

The wheelbase is 19" shorter than the Raptor.

The curb weight (stock) is almost 1000# lighter than the Raptor.

I'm not building this rig to be a rock crawler, mud bogger, or baja runner. I'm primarily a hunter, which means that I'm looking for a utility rig that can store my hunting/fishing gear (hence the truck cap and truck vault drawer system) and have a good chance at getting me offroad where I need to. I do realize that most of the mods are aesthetic (neoprene seat covers, gps, etc...), but these are all items that complete my truck that's right for me.

I'm sure I could have built an awesome truck using the Raptor as my starting point, but for what I have into the truck I'm extremely satisfied.

I'll try to get some pictures posted. Thanks for everybody's help and encouragement.

The mechanics up at Unlimted Offroad said they really like working on a new one; everything's clean, nothing is rusted in place.

Wheels and tires tomorrow

Wish list for the new truck:
Doug Thorley Headers
MagnaFlow High-Flow Cat's & Mufflers
Any suggestions for anything different?
Go buy the Raptor, regardless of if it does not have some of the cool stuff you are looking to add it is a way better truck even bone stock.

That front bumper is badass looking BTW.

$20,000? Wow... thats a lot of cash for that list.

Other than the Raptor comment, and the not caring about spending money...

Looks like a nice build on a truck. I'd like to see what else you have in mind.

Remember, he is also paying for labor as well. Still seems a little high, though......

I was honestly thinking it would look like one of the pimped out rigs you see, but it turned out looking really good. The important thing is you got what you wanted, and if you're happy with it, great. And I agree with you about the vinyl floors. I do a lot of hunting/camping so I ordered my F350 in the XL package to get them. I wish they had a carpet delete option in the XLTs.

Does anyone else look at this set up and think Ford should bring back a full sized Bronco?
