Default Theist or Non-Theist

Please respond to this anonymous poll. Read the definitions first.

Are you :

1. Theist- You subscribe to a specific set of beliefs about a specific god(s). I.e. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, etc.

2. Non-Theist- You lack a set of religious beliefs about a specific god or gods. You don't necessarily positively claim there is no god(s), but don't have a belief in one. I.e. atheist, agnostic, free thinker, etc.

The reason I post this is I am curious about the breakdown of GL4x4 versus that of the U.S. as a whole. According to this pew poll, non theists represent around 16% of the public. I always wonder how many more people there actually are that aren't represented, who don't want to use the term atheist because of the negative connotations involved with it.

Trying to save peoples souls is persecution? Wow, you have a twisted sense of that word.

No, you're just not the best salesman for the afterlife. If you worked solely on commission, you'd end up having to suck cock just to buy your expected child diapers.

I am a Non-Theist. I prefer Buddhism, which is more a way of life and conducting oneself than actually worshiping a god. And before the ignorant claim Buddha is a "God", I will remind you that he was the first person to achieve enlightenment and tried to teach others how to reach nirvana.

Much like Jesus, except Buddha was a mere man and nirvana referred to living in complete harmony and understanding (in the NOW) instead of a promise of eternal afterlife in Heaven.

Can we go into the big debate about how do you know that Buddha was the first man to achieve enlightenment. No old books or writings allowed.

I also would like proof the Buddha ever actually existed.

No old books or writings allowed.

No stories passed down through generations allowed.

I think you believe in a fairy tale, a cartoon character, a childrens bed time story.

Wow this is kinda fun, not much in the way of intellegence but fun.

Gives me a new perspective on the anti christians.

I guess by definition, I'm a Non-Theist. I believe in a supream being of some type but I believe very little of traditional religious teachings. I believe in "God" but I don't believe in Heaven or Hell. I try to be a good person without putting on a false front for the big payoff after death.

I think the Bible has many good teachings in it but it is also full of contradictions and hate. I also feel the teachings of the Bible have been twisted over time by men trying to use "the word of God" in a manner to achieve their own agenda.

These are my personal views and I don't expect anybody anywhere to believe in God the same way I do. I respect other people's views as long as they respect mine.

One thing that does drive me nutty is how some Christians feel the need to "recruite" people to gain bonus points with God. The smugness and self rightousness that is broadcast by some of these individuals is laughable at times.

I guess in summary, religion is a personal attibute. All I ask is that you keep your views to yourself.

See Tommy,
That's the great thing about being Buddhist; the fact that nothing is promised - good OR bad - only how to get through life and be happy.

The teachings are much like the 10 commandments in that they relate guidelines on morality (except nothing says Worship no other God in Buddhism); you accept others as they are. You know that what others do may hurt you and you work on dealing with it and not take it personally.

I'm also not anti-Christian - I will poke and prod at things in Christianity that I don't like, however, I am not against Christians. I rather care for many Christians in my life - YOU INCLUDED, TOES!

Because I do not yet understand Christianity or if I ever will understand it and become a Christian does not make me against it.

Toes, I know you well enough to know when you're pulling my leg (I think...)

I know your Love for the Lord and it is no less real or in any way wrong because of my personal views - I just wanted to get a few points out there on how I felt. :)

Speaking of Buddha - I just had a revelation - I wonder if those little shittty statues started the saying "Fat, Dumb, and Happy."

Being a good person is not enough. It is not about brownie points with God. It is about wanting good friends or loved ones to with them when you die in a good place as opposed to the alturnitive. You may not believe in heaven or hell but they are real. If you were really interested in finding out the truth, ask God, pray to Him and ask Him to show you the truth.

Please re-read the smugness and self rightiousness part. It is enough because that is what I believe in.

Your religious veiws are wrong and distorted (how's that feel). You also believe in a being that invented dick warts.

Budda was a man, he died and stayed dead. He had an idea, a philosphy of how he thought things should be.
See with Jesus, He was God and man in one. He died and rose again, He walked on water, He healed people, He preformed miricles, He had control of the laws of physics.
I would believe and follow a guy that could things no other man could do as opposed to a guy that could not conquer death.
The truth is all there for everybody to see, you just refuse see it because you were told a lie and believe the lie.
