Are you saying you want to upgrade from XP to windows 7, or do you want to downgrade from Windows 7?

or you want to run xp software on an windows 7 machine?

Installing xp on windows 7 isn't as easy as it sounds. Most of the window 7 machines now have different drivers, especially the SATA hdd driver.

You would need to find compatible XP drivers for all your hardware (some may not have any) and slipstream an XP install disk with the correct drivers.

If you just are looking to run software, install like normal and run compatibility mode. by right clicking the exe file

I believe he wants the emulator to run his XP software on W7. IIRC, W7 can do this (its listed as a config option on my W7 Ultimate upgrade package), but you need to meet the hardware requirements and that configuration needs to be chosen at install?

I use VMware. Its free and you can install many different OS and run it as an emulator. Works very well to run XP stuff in Vista.

I also use compatibility mode a lot as described above. It all depends on what you are trying to do.

Installing XP on a 7 system is no different than installing 7 on an XP machine.

Both require a clean hard drive, so you'll be installing drivers regardless. 7 may "recognize" the hardware and allow use of them, but you will have to install the required drivers on either system in order for them to operate correctly. Drivers for SATA drives install with the motherboard drivers. You just need to find what components are in your PC and download the drivers before reformatting for the OS you want to run.

Yes thats what I am looking for. after posting this I found that you can get the free emulator from Microsoft. it lets you run in xp mode. I was hoping that my photoshop programs would run on 7 but i am unsure as of yet. they are cut for xp.

They should run on 7. I have Photoshop 7 and it runs fine. I believe its almost a 10 year old version by now.

7 can run pretty much any program that any of their previous versions could. You can select the compatibility on any program, all the way back to Windows 95. 7 will basicly act as their own emulator.

Like, my GTA4 game is not compatible with Windows 7, but it can still run it because it was installed in compatibility with Windows XP, and is run as though I'm still using it instead of 7.

Yep, its a whole new operating system compared to XP, so it will need a different set of drivers in order for some hardware to function correctly.
