Default AX5 rebuild

So my AX5 in my '93 YJ has a 3rd gear grind up shifting and down shifting and a 2nd gear grind down shifting and reverse grinds going in. My buddy just got his rebuild and for just new bearings and syncros it costed about $750. My question is how hard or expensive is it to rebuild yourself? Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks,
Zak

Edit: anyone know who i can get a rebuild kit from, thats not super expensive but still has quality parts?

It isn't all that hard, but will cost you about what a used one will go for.

So might as well rebuild it and have a newer trans then buying a used one you know nothing about.

my buddies jeep was doing that with his 92 yj jeep and he had the 4 cyl in it and i went down and bought some GM syncro mesh and i put it in his trany and it helped alot. it was grinding alot but after i put that in his trany it only did it a light bit. his ground in every gear. but u could try that as a band aid untill u get a chance to fix it the correct way.

I'm currently in the middle of rebuilding the AX5 in my YJ. I've already installed one used trans and it died a month ago .

How's it going for you?
You running into any big problems so far?
Where'd you get your parts?

It's on hold until I can find a bearing puller to get at the synchos, it's been a bit of a pain so far. I haven't thought about where to get the parts yet.

Ok. Good luck. Let me know what problems you run into in the rebuild.

Sorry; let me correct my statement.

If you only will need to replace one or two parts, it will cost the same as a used trans.

BUT- you still have a used trans with one or two new parts. If you replace everything that should be replaced in a full rebuild, you will pay double what you should expect a used trans to go for. A good, low mileage trans is always a better idea than trying to piece back together one that has already failed, and may fail again.
