Default charging sytem problem

94 gmc sierra 5.7L 4x4 w/ a.c.

i just installed a set of headers on my truck (fri feb19) and the charging system is acting up. voltage gage reading 9.5-10volts. put a new battery and alternator on (sat feb20) gage read 12- 14 volts for about a day. now its back down to 9.5-10 volts. if i leave anything on for more than 5 - 10 mins it kills the battery completly. i jumped it and the truck will run for about a minute and a half after you take the jumper cables off then dies and i have to re-jump. im out of ideas. any suggestions? any and all information regauding this will be much apprectiated thank you all.

thanks
ken

Starters test the battery. and double check everything you did.

btw, you only need to post this in one forum.

is your alternator working????? whats the voltage when running??? is this a 1 wire alt?
if all the powers checkout at the back of the alt. and you dont have 14 ish volts at the batt when running then you need another alternator. also what are you using for a guage, if your using the dash guage they are known to go bad and read low or high, use a battery tester or a volt meter

you didn't happen you remove and ground cables from the engine block while removing the manifolds and then forget to reconnect it? Check that you have the correct grounds attached. body-frame, body-engine, engine to frame, and battery to frame or engine.

1 wire alternator. the voltage when running is 9.5-10 according to the tell -tell gauge on the dash. ill have to recheck in the morning with a volt meter.

so you swapped in an old 1 wire alt, or are you refering to a 3 wire alt as a 1 wire?

do you have a charge indicator light in the dash, and is it coming on? if it truly is a 1 wire (doubtful) then you wont have one, but if it is a 3 wire, you will, and the light must be functional for the system to energize...turn the key on, and make sure the light comes on, then start the engine and make sure the light goes off...if it does, check battery voltage both with the engine running and with it, and everything else, off...the battery voltage should read approx 12V on a fully charged battery with everything off, and should read approx 13.8-14.2 if the charging system is working correctly...do this with a voltmeter, not the in-dash guage (even thoguh the volt guages do not often fail, like the other guages, they are poorly labeled)

report back what you find, and what alternator it actually is, and I'll tell you what other tests to make before removing the alternator

theres only 1 wire that goes to the connecter. if u pull the connecter off theres 4 slots for prongs. if you look at the alternator theres for prongs in where the connector goes (same as previous alternator) i do have a battery light if thats what you mean???

going to work on it now will post my results later

We accept cash.

Sometimes the easy problems are the ones you miss on the obvious answers. I've done it alot myself and will do again.
