Default What to do with a 46 Willys ??

I have a stock 46 willys jeep (so I'm told)

I just want to use to use it for trails and playing around a little bit, maybe take it to the mounds.

I was thinking of leaving it stock and just driving it. the tires on it now have good tread. or doing a spring over and adding some appropriate sized TSL swampers or something.

What do you guys think? ideas? dos and donts?

later model cj3a/3b/5 rear axle and a narrow track cj 30 make good axle upgrades. I would find a 2-3" lift and keep it sua with some 34-35" tires. A buick v6 or 4.3 are a great fit if you want some more power.

Check put Jeepfreak81's build, his is a blast for trail riding.

There aren't too many of those around anymore. They are getting more and more scarce and their value is rising all the time. At the very least, leave it as is. Preserve it as best you can and get it running. Just enjoy driving around a piece of history. If you decide to modify it, do so in a way that isn't reversible in the future.
Try just getting it running first and drive it around a little before you do anything to it. You will be surprised how capable it is in stock form and you wont believe how much fun it is to tool around w/ the windshield down, road wizzin' by and an old jeep rattlin' underneath you.

If you do decide you need something more capable and bigger, get a cheap YJ and mod the crap out of it and restore the flatty.

that's a nice find rizzo.
I cannot see the passenger side rims but the 2 drivers are the correct rims, still has the front drive flanges and that seat looks to be in great shape. the parking lights on the grill hints that the grill is a bit later after the light style change.

you can double check the serial numbers over at www.thecj2apage.com to see where it falls manufacture wise not to mention endless amounts of help from a great group of guys into early jeeps from modified to exacting off the line restorations. I would definitely post up some pics over there on it and get some input from the real experts on your treasure.

I gotta say that in my process of my stock 2a resto/build I wouldn't think about changing it much from stock as it is simply too much fun as is. but then again i always wanted a stock flattie.

it looks as though there may have been a plow on there. check the front frame horns forward of the crossmember for cracks (right at where the grill mounts are on the framerails for cracking.

one upgrade I would recommend is swap out the rear dana 41 with a 3a or 3b dana 44 simply because parts are cheaper and easier to find than for the long discontinued 41. or if you get lucky and find a dana 23-2 out of a wartime jeep or very early 45 cj2a parts are easier to find and less expensive not to mention different gear ratio availability. if you have the bendix or repezza front shafts, an upgrade to a spicer style wouldn't be a bad idea.

if you need parts, I have ordered from kaiser willys, walcks, and willys ovrlnd. they are all good but I order the most from walcks.

If you decide to just run it as it is for the summer(have a blast running it stock this year)
It would be a good idea to box the front frame horns. They tend to bend/tweak/ develop stress cracks.

if you do go with larger diameter tires, stick with skinny tires like jeep freaks.

do springs over and keep the stock springs as they are probably real pliable and will be a fair ride with alot of articulation on the trail. put big tires on it. If you have 5.38"s you can still have fun with the flathead>

My father in law just restored his CJ2A last summer back to near original. Its a blast to ride in, but when you are fat like me, its hard to drive since it was made for skinny service members.

My vote is keep it stock, find a cj5 to hack up and mod.
