Default High Voltage

Noticed earlier...the volt gauge was running 15-16 a tad bit high. On the way home i looked down and it was running almost 19V. What the hell would do that???? My experiences in the past only made the voltage drop.

04 GMC 2500 HD 6.6L Duramax

Anyone got any ideas???

your alternator has an internal voltage regulator. They can fail in either way low or high. Replace your alternator.

No...works now and is reading 14 with new batts. The batt shop i went to said since everything is computer controlled it's possible that it just made everything go haywire having the shorted batt.

Having a bad battery can cause a load and make the alt go full field and try to charge it up. Its actually not uncommon. The first thing to check with any starting/charging problem is always the battery.
