Default 700r4 issues

50k mile trans, sat for 4 years in the truck.

I have been driving it again and everything was fine, until recently. It wants to stick in 3rd, and reverse will not fully engage. I thought I lost the gears, but after parking it on a hill for a week everything was functional again with no slippage.

Parked it for a bit, came back and reverse and 4th were not engaging again.

What could I be looking at? Just trying to decide what shop to take it to, but want to be prepared with the cash in hand.

I'm not crawling under it in this cold, and I will be needing it sooner then I can get to it with my work schedule right now.

id start with dropping the pan. drain the fluid and put a new filter on it then refill with fresh ATF

that may do it.

otherwise it could be $500+ for the shop to do it

The first time was about $800, if it goes to the shop I have other stuff for them to look at anyway I have to have the truck reliable, so right now cost isn't the biggest issue.

Keep my local mechanic busy if nothing else

Valid question

Yes I did, and that is why it was weird because it was acting like a low fluid issue. I was thinking maybe the valvebody might have something sticking?

it most likely does..... I'm thinking boost valve. Is this the one that Bill did and you had to have the case swapped due to cracked case from a drive shaft?

No I still have not done anything with that, too much stuff came up between my wedding last year and some surgeries I have had to have.

I should be getting that trans done in the next month or two. This is the trans in my 1992 Suburban.
