They are not really all that crazy. Overland Vans makes a kit for the Astro/Safari and also for full size vans. Check it -----> http://www.overlandvans.com/0104_gallery.html

Absolutely.

I have seen a few of the Express full sizes at the dunes with solid front axles.

Down here I see a lot of those Ford E-series vans lifted, like totally decked out for expeditions and crap. I don't know why, they always look real clean and don't ever look like they wheel them.

honestly, a 4wd van makes alot of sense for alot of people...can seat several people, hold all thier gear inside, and make it back to the campsite with ease...tow a trailer, better winter driving, etc...

a friend just recently bought an AWD Astro (I think) for that reason...swap out the case, mild left, and he can take the wife and 2 (soon to be 3) kids out camping, and have plenty of room

Completely Agree. I would go that route if I had a ton of money. I had a 95 conversion van that I thought would be fun to turn into 4x4. I mean, it had a 350, full frame. WOuldn't be that hard to slap in a Solid axle and a different TCase and Tranny (or tail housing). I almost considered starting with a Body lift....Then I changed my mind.

My wife drives a 2001 AWD astro. Ive had 4x4 trucks and jeeps that are horrible compared to this van in the snow. Its by far the best vehicle ive ever driven in the snow, just sticks and goes. Fuel mileage on the other hand sucks...lol

Just spray paint a bow tie on the side. You'll never know the difference.

Saw an Econoline 4X4 roll down the dunes in the mid 80's. There was camping crap spilled out from the top of the hill to the bottom.....van people.
