Migrant worker told police he shot Edward Rasch in the chest after he was fired, arrest affidavit shows
By Nate Reens | The Grand Rapids Press
February 08, 2010, 5:09PM

Police say Ed Rasch, left, was shot by Socorro Hurtado-Garcia.KENT COUNTY -- Alone in the United States for over 23 years, Socorro Hurtado-Garcia became part of Edward Rasch's family, but court records show a December layoff severed those ties and led to Hurtado-Garcia plotting his boss' death.

Hurtado-Garcia, a 57-year-old from Mexico living legally in the country, approached Kent County sheriff's deputies Friday night and told them he shot Rasch once in the chest with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, an arrest affidavit shows.

Hurtado-Garcia is accused of killing Rasch, 50, while the farmer delivered paychecks at his housing camp on Friday night. Rasch was found dead inside the trailer where Hurtado-Garcia continued living after being let go from work.

Sheriff's Detective E.J. Johnson wrote that the layoff fueled the suspect's anger.

My neighbor is Fred Rasch. When i was with Freds kids a few years back on there farm on Fruit Ridge down by 9 mile i seen that mexican that shot Ed doing stuff in shop. Makes ya think twice when you live in an area surrounded by migrant workers more than half the year.

I hear they are only laying off Mexicans in Michigan. I can see why this guy feels singled out.

"Hey, thanks for taking me in and letting me become part of your family until you had to let me go because you couldn't afford to pay me in this crappy economy. That was pretty damned decent of you." BANG

Seriously? Now, as "punishment" for killing what sounds like a good guy, he'll be guaranteed 3 squares, a room and a job (even if it does pay pennies) probably for the rest of his life.
