Default divorced BW 1356

IS this possible? I mean seriously.
I would love to have a divorced bw1356 if it is possible.

I can't find a 4x4 alison transmission for a 3.9 ISB cummins, and even if I could, I doubt it would be cheap.

I'm not looking to spend $4000 on a new trans and trasfer case out of a dodge either, so there has to be a cheap way to do this

any ideas?

I've seen posts of guys using the ZF trans out of a F250 for their cummins swaps when I was searching for a 4x4 ZF for my 250.

Not currently possible (without a lot of money) there was never a divorced 1356 case they are made out of magnesium and not aluminum. The case is not designed to support itself not to mention it is weak in the rear bearing retainer area and they tend to crack and leak there. Also the manual shift 1356 t-case is reasonably strong and reliable just keep it tight to the trans adapter and make sure the output bearing retainer is in good shape.
A ZF 5-speed from 97 to 07 models s542 or s547 come with the NV 271 or the electric shift 273 which is a little heavier but a lot stronger. Good luck.

well a stick shift is out of the question.

A dodge automatic with the 273 might work, depending on cost.

Do you know if you can use the 273 with the dash controls for the bw1356?

Why not a divorced NP205? They're not that hard to find, and they don't come much stronger than that.
Also, bread trucks sometimes had 4cyl cummins in them with a chevy turbo 400 trans behind it. If you could find one of those, you could always gut the th400, put a 4x4 tail end on it and go with a chevy style t-case.
Just throwing ideas out there, I don't know the specifics of your project.

I still think I might want to try this.

Anyone have any busted or junk bw1356 t cases?
I think I'll need an e4od output shaft or one that will work from a diffirent trans.

I thought I remember reading that the gm allison is based off of the medium duty 345? I think is the model. Maybe look into using a tail housing off of one of those on a medium duty allison?

there is a ford small block transmission adapter for the isb bellhousing which i believe is an SAE #3 housing

how to get one, or what they cost is beyond me

that would be awsome man!

I am going to try to machine a plate that will go on the imput side of the transfer case that is also the bracket for bolting it to a crossmember.

I will also add a tube for a bushing, seal, and the input shaft that I want to make out of an outpput shaft off an E40D. I want splines and threads on the other end, so I can add a yoke.

Any junk bw1356 would be good for a mock up

got bored due to the weather, and started teaching myself CAD.

Came up with a few ideas for some brackets, and adapters.

With this one, I can use a stub shaft I made and use a stock d44 pinion seal and yoke.





I might turn the mount around and have a crossmember directly underneath it, or I'm thinking it would work better over the top of the t case.
