Default House Duct Cleaning

Has anyone had this done? If so who did you use and what did it cost?

What are your opinions of it? Gimmick/waste of money or a good idea.

Edit:

The reason I am asking is because this is a new house to me. Apparently the people before me had dogs. I took the cold air return cover in my hall way off to paint and the entire cold air was block by fur.

I just changed my air filter wich is only about 2 months old max and there was a good 1/4 inch- 3/8 inch of crap on it.

The gubernment says its a total waste of money unless you have HIV or herpes or other nasties in your duct system that you shouldn't have.

We have this done every year. (about $150) We have a dog and a cat in the house, you would not believe how much dust and hair that gets into those ducts.

I helped take out HVAC duct work at a house I'm working at and yes, I would suggest it. Especially if there is that much dog fur. When I was doing that job, I found a SuperBall from 1965. Still bounces great!

I worry about getting a company that will scam on this job. I've heard way too many stories about people paying for it and really getting little or NO serves for the money.

I've had it done once in 4 years and that was after the begged me to get it done.

SoClean calls my house once a month to try to get me to have this done. I keep telling them that I have boiler heat, but they keep calling anyway.

I did it once at an old house of mine....alot of crap came out, so it seamed worth the $150 or so the crew charged

Make sure the company you hire has

That huge vacume mounted in there truck
And they drill all the little holes in the main ducts,
That they use that banger attatchment thingy,in the ducts.
And that they put those rubber plugs back into the hole they drilled, and not just duct tape

The company I work for offers duct cleaning, most of the time when you do a house you get a fair amount of stuff out, mostly dust, cat/dog hair and construction debris from the original build. Unless you do major construction or have a ton of cats and dogs I can't see any reason to do it more then every 5-10 years. Low wall mounted or floor returns will collect lots more crap than high wall returns.

Truck mounted vac is not mandatory, we have a portable unit that will do just as good of job as long as you don't try to do the supply and returns at the same time(some of the truck mount vacs can do both at the same time).

Beware of the guys with a very low price, most of the time the super deal only covers one supply or return, they then charge enough for the add ons to get their price way up there.

Safety King in Pontiac has a pretty good rep, we recommend them for jobs that are bigger than we want to deal with or out of our area or really nasty.
