Default 5.2 no balls

borrowed my brothers truck tonight. it is almost dangerously slow. does not want to go over 70 unless down hill. stomp on the gas and it still just wants to creep along. oil pressure, temp all in check. newer trans, no way its just the trans slipping. when you do stomp on the gas sound like a tornado of air leaking from under the hood. am i discribing a plenum gasket leak? if so how hard is the replacement? i know for sure the cat is gutted as well so not the issue. thanks ahead of time for the help. mike

Intake breather may not be on right or broke or may even have one heck of a vacuum leak

is this an obd2 truck? (96+) If it is an OBD2 truck, does it have an o2 simulator for the cat-mouned o2 sensor? (keeps the computer happy)

How's the plugs look? Is it getting good fuel and spark? Most modern engines with the restrictive (quiet) induction and exhaust systems sound like a retarded vaccum cleaner anyway. It sucks. Check vaccum and see what that reads. If it's tuned up right and stuff, check compression in each cylinder.

if all that fails or while your checking plugs check the compression. May have some valves sticking. To sum up theres lots of possible causes. Just have to start trouble shooting bud. Pulling codes if there are any would be a huge help too.

How is the oil level? is it low? Are there any visible leaks? How long does it take to get 1 quart low?
These engines are known for bad intake manifold pan gaskets. (ie. large internal vaccume leak)

my 94 zj 5.2 w 260k ran the same as you discribed. thats why im kind of lost as to what the dealio is with this other one. its not oil level and does not consume oil. fan clutch is good to go. the tornado sounding sound is when you give it a little extra gas. like 3krpm and above. thats waht leads me to assume plenum is bad.

plugs and such were initially changed by my brother when he noticed the issue. followed by the cat gutting. vehicle is obd2 and there was not a dummy o2 sensor installed. has not thrown a code but im sure it cannot be making the computer very happy.

Pull off the air filter houseing , Open throttle and look down the hrottle body . If you see a lot of oil on the bottom of the plenum tray , you very well could have the dreaded intake plenum gasket leak .

Hook a vacume gage up ?

I done mine on a 5.2 , I did not have the loud sound as you decribe . But did have the oil on the bottom of intake.

About doing the plenum gasket , all I can say is , it is time consumeing . A lot of stuff to remove to get to it .

Another thought , maybe check to see if the EGR valve is sticking /

Good Luck

intake and throttle body are COVERED in oil residue. could maybe be from over oiling the kn filter, but its pretty black in there. this truck is non egr. im kinda curious as to which years are. i have owned several of these engines in various vehicles and years, but never seen egr. even have a set of headers for magnum engine w egr. the pcv valves were however pretty hosed, but i dont think thats nearly enough pressure to cause this. will be replacing those asap.

came across another issue when i picked it up today. ran fairly decent from dexter to ytown. took it to the store real quick and about half way there would not go over 20 mph. the harder i pushed the gas, the slower it wanted to go. at first i thought trans was stuck in 1st (again new trans) but the rpm's would not go above 22oo. stumped as to what the deal was with that.
