"dual" antennas mostly divide your power, and they have to be "matched" or the waves cancel each other out, its all a looks thing. Mounting them on a tool box makes a small ground plane, and weakens your signal.

Yep. If you want to talk to people in your immediate area, IE your trail group, what you have will work. your just not close enough to the people you hear for them to hear you. When it gets really complex is when you want to start getting some range. I bought a used radio for $60, added almost $140 in mods to it, and went though several antenna setups and was getting about 8 miles with the last setup I ran. with that radio and a good antenna you could probably get 3-4 miles, with a cheap mag mount antenna and the radio plugged into the cig lighter, maybe you could get a mile.

Depends on the noise level of your environment. I have a $60 astatic in my semi but a stock cobra mic would be fine in a car.

my two wilson 5000s do a fine job on my western star along with my galaxy 99 and texas star 667, I can talk to my house 50 miles away when the channel is quiet.

Most of us assumed at the beginning that a CB was plug and play like every other piece of electronics in our lives. Not so.

A good match between CB and Antenna with a proper tune is like night and day. Best thing you can do before throwing any more money at it is go to that shop that was posted above. Most CB shops will put a meter on your junk for free.

A shit set up can have almost zero transmit range. My bet is your SWR is up over 3 and your not getting out over a couple blocks...

This might be a stupid question but how do you know if your transmitting (getting out) if no one is answering you? And you may have pinched the line on the antena cord or even broke the little copper wire that runs through it when you ran the wire or maybe you just have a bad cb radio ? Is it new ? Take it back and return it for a different one ? Like everyone has been saying it basically just a plug in and play.... Channel 19 is the buisiest channel, Just say breaker 1 9 looking for a radio check. Get close to an express way and try it then ?? Good luck !!

Basically, you change the length of your antenna. You hook up a SWR meter and make small changes in the length (or location) of the antenna until you have the best reading possible. Many antennas have a set screw with a small wire whip that will allow you to change the length. Even 1/8 inch can make a huge difference when your getting close to being tuned right.

Most people who wheel a little have a CB. Find another option is to find a friend with a radio and see if they can hear you.

I've been on runs with people who have CB's set up wrong, sometimes you can hardly hear them from one end of the pack to the other. 300 yards and they are gone. On the other hand, a stock radio that is getting out well will have a range of miles sometimes. Especially on a quiet channel like 4...
