Default Is there anything worth driving in the Crystal/CarsonCity/Stanton/Ithaca areas?

I'm going to be visiting relatives at Crystal Lake this weekend. The family is already there, so I'm taking the jeep. Anything interesting out there?

I know I'm at least an hour from Baldwin and farther to Silver Lake. I'm looking for something close by though. I will probably only have a couple hours to spare.

Is it one of the "game areas"? I saw a few in the area. There is one that is due west of the lake. If nobody had a better suggestion, I was going to go that way and hope to find some state fire roads.

Thanks, BTW.

My suggestion is to pick up a michigan gazzeteer from DeLorme Maps and use it to find places to two-track. Plus, if you're wheeling on a road that is shown on the map, you know you're legal and it makes everybody happy. :)

Best of luck finding some good spots!

X2 on Delorme.

If you go out the road that is next to the grocery store...dang I can't remember the name of the street now....same road you take to go down to the dam on the Betsie River. Anyway, go out that way and you will find some trails...nothing too hard core though. Eventually you'll come to about the only good hill climb off to the right just after you cross a bridge over a small stream. There is a straight up and long way up. The long way is alot of off camber twisty...fun.

Or you can go down to Elberta Beach and hit the dunes. You can driver all over behind the dune that is first after the water. You can not cross that dune and actually drive on the beach but it's a fun little area.

Thanks guys, I didn't see your suggestions before I left though.

I do have a DeLorme Atlas, a couple actually. I also had my topos in my GPS. I putzed around in the Stanton State Game Area. All two tracks. I saw a lot of wildlife and of course forgot my camera. Most notabliy, 5 swans coming across Colby Lake as the fog was lifting. Would have been a great picture.

I only had about an hour and a half. I talked to a girl at the BP in Stanton, she said that most of the roads were closed by the DNR. The local kids have been partying around there too much.

I was on one longer stretch off of 66, but got cut off about half way through. There were some campers that put a tent in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!. It was 7:30am, so I just backed out. Too bad though, there was another lake on the other side of them.

Next time I'm out there, I'll check out the Betsie and Elberta areas.

Thanks again.
