I spent the past weekend in Guanajuato Mexico with Walker Evans and Jimmy Smith. They were down here for the MXRRA event. The race ended up being canceled about an hour before it was supposed to start due to a greedy govt, but we still did the pre-run, parade and party. Good times. I have to say Walker and Jimmy both impressed me as being down to earth racers who just happen to have hit the big time. Walker spent more time with all the kids than he did with adults, which is great to see. Both of them never turned anyone away or acted too busy for a picture and autograph. Both of them have ties to MI (Walker was born and raised outside Lansing and Jimmy because of his NASCAR/ Truck series sponsors).

All the land is owned by a small group of miners who hates the govt. They have opened it up to everyone to use, despite what the govt says they can use the land for.

Pre-run

Teams from Costa Rica and Venezuela

Walker and Jimmy with team Venezuela

drive up the mountain to the race

Walker driving the stroker

local TV interview. Ponce (speaking) is the event director and the person who invited me. He is a rally pilot who is trying to grow rock racing in Mexico

Walker commenting on how beautifull the land is and how they could use it better to grow motorsports

Jimmy talking

The race was canceled after the interviews, but most groups stayed and played around

Very cool Bill. More nice pictures too.

The rally sounds awesome. Don't miss out on that, whatever you do.

Supremely jealous, that would be an experience to remember. Reading those pace notes seems stressful.

I figure I should update this.

I have somewhat become a member of GTOROCKS RACING. I will be driving my buggy at the KOH LCQ for Team GTO Feb 9th or 10th.

http://www.gtorocksracing.com/id22.html

The WRC Mexico rally is March 7th.

Awesome! It has you listed as the Co-driver, but you'll actually be doing the driving?

Ok, so now my journey took me to Thailand, specifically Pattaya and Rayong.

Hotel of choice was the Marriat. This is a crazy town with crazy lifestyles, and really good food.

I'll just get with the random pics

Walking Street at night

That's a big beer. Singha is Thai beer, and was actually pretty good

South end of the town, looking back north

This is Coral Island, about a 20 min boat ride from Pattaya.

Basically you "rent" a boat and driver for the day. They run you o the island and stay there until you want them to drive you back. That means there is a pile of boats out there.

Mai Tia

More great food on Coral Island

wild, but tame monkeys

Pattaya shoreline

Ont the beach right in front of the Marriott, looking south west

The Cocktail Bus... a modified VW bus. These are all over the place. They obviously don't drive.

Some shots of the Marriott, and the courtyard

Swim-up bar, that we never used

We also went on a jungle zip-line tour. First time on a zipline and first time ina jungle... It was pretty fun.

Unfortuantly all these shots are with my point and shoot No way to get the SLR back there

very sunburnt from Coral Island the day prior

Average run

Yeah, it's pretty high

This is the longest (and last) zipline. 300m total. You can't even see where it ends. It is behind the tree directly ahead. Kristen is only about 1/2 way there in the picture. You get moving pretty fast :D

So it turns out getting a car built to 2008 WRC spec to pass 2010 WRC tech (and the new FIA 2000 standards) is rediculous.
