There's an Alton Brown Good Eats ep where he demonstrates how to safely deep fry a turkey, using a ladder, some ropes, and some pulleys.

the one real smart thing i saw was he shut the burner off before putting turkey in if everyone did that there would be no fires at all

I've never had a problem, but definitely a nice safety precaution for future turkey fryings

personally, I think deep fried turkey is disgusting...I've never cooked one that way, but tried it 3 different times, each made by different people, and all sucked...I'll stick with doing the long smoke
