Angry trans? 94 dodge ram 1500

i was wondering how i could tell what trans is in my 1994 dodge ram 1500 auto. and i believe the trans is starting to go. it seems to be slipping goin 2nd into 3rd. but im no auto mechanic so i need some help. guy i got the truck from on a trade said that i should try:
- replacing trans filter and fluid or
-he said to smell the trans fluid and if it didnt smell burnt then the trans isnt bad?
-then he siad if the trans wasnt bad then its probably a hardened seal and he said to put a pint of "dot three" brake fluid in the trans and it will soften the seals and might make it stop slipping?

Can anyone back up this option for me to try this so i dont mess stuff up? if not what should i check ?

and if anyone has a good trans there selling for a dodge that will fit my truck im interested in buying it.

H'mm, some intersting ideas he gave you.

Not sure, but dodge diesel trannys (47rh and re) need the bands adjusted or they will fail early/slip.

Do some searching on a couple dodge forums and see what you drum up.

EDIT: I know yours is gas, this is just what I know about dodge autos.

If you want good dodge advice, try: http://dodgetruckworld.com They're pretty helpful there.

I bought a 96 Ram 1500 this year, with same motor in it and my tranny's been slippin but it got really worse after a mud hole back in july. Saving up for a rebuild/new tranny. Did you price any out yet?

Back in July/August, I priced them at different places (junkyards/tranny shops and online) cheapest I found was $600 rebuilt (if you're lucky to find one and return your core? but you might have to pay $100+ shipping if found online) found them up to $900 for rebuilds, or $1,300+ if you go with new tranny instead.

If I had the money, I'd buy a new tranny built stronger for mudding. But just like everyone else, I'm broke HAHA

Good luck with it.
