Just checked(never know) and the hanger looks good, definetly not coming from there. Thanks.

I droped the pan and someone with more knowledge then me checked it out and said he couldn't see anything wrong. I took pics there on the 2nd or 3rd page of this post. It's still running and hasn't seemed to get any louder, soetimes it even seems to go away for a little bit. I've even wheeled it a few times. Might be getting a engine soon just waiting for details.

I had the same problem after i replaced motor.Sound like a knock in the motor loud for like 5 seconds on start up.Then at idle you could hear it slight knocking it sounded like it was coming from the oil pan.I knew it was not the actual motor knocking because it was new,But it sure sounded liek it was the motor.Come to find out it was the inspection plate.I took the inspection plate off completely and bolted the starter back up sound was gone. Now i just have to figure out why its hitting the inspection plate because i tried 2 different inspection plates and it hit both of them.

Damn wish that was the case for me! ran mine with the plate off after checking the bolts and flex plate and it still did it.

Take turns pulling the plug wire for each cylinder and listen. If you shut down a cylinder and the noise gets quieter or goes away you've narrowed down the offending cylinder.

its probaly the rod berings dont worry soon enough you will get a chunck of the rod shoot through the side of the block so either whail on it till it goes or pull it and find a new motor exactley what i did a year ago same sound at start got louder and louder then boom so good luck it is a really nice jeep that has been cared for

Bumper and winch look nice.......

And perhaps it is because it is a '98 XJ with a 4.0L and NOT a '96, also with approx. 18x,xxx miles on it..... But what do I know.

And you're from COldwater? I lived there for a few years...Out on Marble Lake.

I'm hoping to get a motor for it soon. I'll drive it till it breaks.
Sorry to hear that you lived here once. Coldwater sucks ass hope to be back in Florida in a year or so.

When you had a friend look at the engine...did they just pull the oil pan and that is it? Or did they pull each main bearing and rod bearing cap?

By that, I am meaning that is my old Jeep. And it is a 98XJ not a 1996, and with a lot of miles on it. Meaning, the motor is probably a little tired.

I was at work but I don't think he pulled main bearing and rod bearing caps.

Oh I see. The odometer says 140,000 on it. Is that alot? My 96 had 196,000 and the motor sounded great!

If you do a "Carfax" on your vin#(depending how the title was filed/mileage filled in) hopefully the true mileage would show up on the report? Cost $30. to do a carfax. I do that on any car/jeep I buy. Welcome to the school of "Hard Knocks" Swallow hard and let it go. You'll be smarter the next time.
I still get raw deals once in a while, but I dont pass it on to the next guy without saying something about it. <thats my .02

look at the computer? theres a seal/ sticker on it that will show tampering. if you havent, id doubt that it was messed with. threw off by a non stock tire size, possibly, but you cant change it unless you change a computer
