Lift recomendation for 97 4Runner

I have a nice 97 4Runner I use as a DD and want to make it a little more capable. Main problem now is tires. I would like to fit 285/75/16's. I like the Sonoran Steel kit but it is more than I really want to spend. I have seen the spacer kits but after a trip to the dunes I would like something with a bit more travel than stock. Any suggestions on something in between. I would like to kepp total cost of kit under $1000.

That won't do anything to improve the suspension. I would do a REVTEK spacer lift before a body lift.

does toytec make a kit for that? I have installed a bunch of lifts for 3rd gens and fjcruisers. but I honestly cant remember the brands. I think OME was a couple of them (old man emu), they always make nice stuff.

I approve this method. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...ghlight=runner

of course it is more than a lift but it is pure awesome.

I found a ToyTec kit that seems to be what I am looking for. It uses the Bilstein ride height adjustable front shocks and OME springs. It is similar to the Sonoran Steel kit except it uses the OME springs insead of the OEM Tundra parts and it is about $500 less at just under $1000.

The OME stuff has always been really nice. And they offer several different springs with different rates and heights so you can tweek the system.

Doesn't OME offer a kit directly?

EDIT: Though if I remember corectly OME might not offer height adjustable shocks, they make be fixed. So the toytech might be nicer.

OME has kits or you can buy parts individually and mix and match the spring rates. The Toytec kit has a couple extras besides the adjustable shocksand the price difference is not that much. My plate on the vehicle is 4RNNR4 almost the same as your screen name. The other 3 that I have are all 1st gen 4Runners.

Toytec has a group buy going on over at tacomaworld.com right now with Eibach springs and Bilstein 5100 shocks. I think they will give you a 7% if you are a member of tacomaworld.

He did. It was built here as well as my Tacoma.

I think I might try to squeeze some 285/75s under my truck in the spring. I am hoping to get some Bilsteins under it too and get the spacers out.

I will give elripster a plug too. You might find something at SDORI.

Toyota builds more cars, with more domestic american content, assembled by NON-UAW ( thank god ) labor than any other "American" car company.

Problem is - because Toyota builds them in the USA - they get quality control issues - such as Tacoma Frames that were contracted to DANA CORP. DANA, and there AMERICAN manufacturing methods outsourced the work to MEXICO to save money - using shitty steel, and not treating the metal proper... now look how many Taco's Toyota has to CRUSH and destroy because or AMERICAN quality. now - Toyota is paying all owners KBB top value CASH for the trucks - no questions - and extra cash if they buy another Toyota.... your AMERICAN car companies would never do that.....would they ?

Toyota made this mistake back in the 80s when they shipped all the trucks over the pond and had a US plant make beds from AMERICAN steel. We all know how well that panned out for those now wood bed trucks ..

So sorry about the rant , to get back to the point -
I have inspected Total Chaos on a 3rd gen, and installed Sonoran Steel, OME and Revtec lifts on friends 3rd gens...

Do it properly... save the extra $300 and get the full kit- system 1.2 - its only $1300. you always get what you pay for - and these Sonoran Steel parts are very well made,

If you want it cheaper, get the Econo Coilovers - rear springs and brake lines. Just make sure you get the front diff drop spacers, or you will blow out CV boots. http://www.sonoransteel.com/store_ta...diff_drop.html

The tracbar and bumpstops aren't needed - just help make the truck drive much better.

Keep in mind - if you go higher then 2-3" lift in the rear, you really need to put longer 4link arms on the rig. At 2.5" the short stock arms make the rear axle start to wrap under the truck, toward the front tires ( this is bad - trust me ).

Hope this helps

I plan on keeping it at 2~3" of lift which should be plenty for the tires I plan on running.
I believe my 97 4Runner was built in Japan and I like my Toyotas built there. I have 2 Fords that were built in Wayne Mi. The only current vehicles that I like are the new Ford Raptor and some of the Mustangs none of which are very practical. I doubt that me driving a 13 year old foriegn vehicle hurts the US automakers any more than my driving one of my 30+ year old Fords would help them. I buy what I am comfortble driving and what I like. I can't afford a Raptor so I'll keep my 4Runners & Broncos.

Hahaha

While many Toyotas are built here in America (unlike most "american" cars). I avoid them like the plague, cause they have a much higher incident rates. (Like the famous tundra camshafts that kept breaking.....that were outsourced to and built by Ford) I like my car to be assembled by a little Japanese guy who if he makes a mistake, he feels dishonerable and kills himself that night. :D

Dont go too high. 3" is the abolute MAX! I would go on that. One of the kits I installed on a 99 runner, the owner kept having me swap out taller and taller springs until it got to a point that he wouldnt even drive it down the road, and he started wearing out ball joints, TRE's and rack bushings.
