Default How to test the Insulation in my house?

I was wondering about the infared imagers that some of the insulation companys use and was wondering if they can give a good reading on how well the insulation in a house is? and can it be judged to its R value?

Which insulation are you concerned about (wall, floor, attic, etc.)? The most important concern should be with your attic, which is normally blown in (versus rolls of fiberglass). If you can tell me what the material is I can probably give you an idea of the R value based on the thickness. If it is blown in, it is normally recycled paper, blown fiberglass, or cellulose. I am not sure how well the imagers work.

I have a friend who does insulation and uses infrared. I went with him to shoot a newly insulated and fresh windowed house. You would not believe the cold points he could find. They are amazing tools, I guess thats why his was $5500(so he says). He is going to come shoot the house I just bought. I will be home the end of next week if you want me to ask him anything, let me know.

sounds simular to one I had my hands on about 10 years back. that one was $56,000. the guy who had it was operating it for about $1000 a day. it did thermal imaging as well as hot point data. it gave a zoom function and as it went in gave surface temps. it was bad ass.

as for the house I put in my bid tonight. the reason I asked about the imager readings is the way it was built there is currently no attic access????? don't have clue why they would seal it up? but shouldn't be an issue getting new one made if I have to.

I don't think that is even legal is it? I thought for fire code there has to be an access to the attic, I could be wrong. My buddy charges $150 to shoot a house and shows the owners all their heat loss. He is making a killing on jobs since he bought it. Good luck with the house. I close on my next week.

Sounds like it would be cheaper to assume it needs to be insulated than to pay for the testing.

I have a buddy that charges $200 or $250 for 2 sessions.... a before and an after (if you choose to insulate, replace windows..etc) and he is making a KILLING.

Damn bastard

Yeah he shoots its afterwards also to show them. I'm glad he is doing good now. He just lost his house and everything earlier this year. He built some condos before the housing market crashed.

I had never heard of this. Sounds pretty awesome. I might check into see if anyone on the West side does it?

thanks
