Default Worth it to go from Vista to WIndows 7 on a laptop?

My laptop is running Vista, and I have hated how long it takes to boot up. We bought a netbook with XP, and I forgot how fast XP is. Does anyone know if Windows 7 is better than Vista? I can get a copy for $30.00. However if it sucks, I can get a copy of XP for $90.00.

So, what are peoples thoughts?

Thanks!

Can you still get a free copy of XP with your vista product code?

you'll see lower memory utilization with win 7, but the new and "improved" UAC blows hard - those are my foot notes from supporting it since beta to rtm product.

...and you can always turn UAC off.

Windows 7 takes all of the best features of Vista and combines it with XP. I've been running the 7 Beta on my PC for 2 months now on a dual boot with Vista Ultimate. I absolutely can not stand going back to Vista for even a few moments. I don't use laptops but from what I hear 7 also manages battery life better.

For $30 I would most definitely take 7 over XP, for the same price.

I've never ran Vista but I'm pretty sure you're better off even going from Vista to 3.1 if you really want to.
I've only ran the beta version of 7 and it was very nice. Obviously lacked features but it was a beta version, very early. I've been running Windows XP for a while, guess it is hard to change. I was running Linux Mandriva for a while and that was great.

You've never ran Vista so I'm not sure how your opinion matters, he did not ask about Linux. As you have never ran Vista I'm not sure how you can compare it to anything.

Edit; What do you generally use your computer for Tie Dyed? What are the specifications of your laptop? If boot up time is your only problem with Vista then yes you will definitely enjoy 7 more. Even running 7 on a slower hard drive it does boot up a great deal faster than my Vista drive. In my opinion you can not go wrong by choosing windows 7, if you have programs that are XP only, 7 has an XP mode for them. Since you are on Vista though, you will only see improvements. I would definitely say the improvements are worth $30. In my opinion the beta of windows 7 is better than anything that Microsuck has ever released. I'm so confident in the full version that I'll be purchasing it without that student discount.

Microsoft tried to improve boot time over Vista and so far i think it boots faster. For $30 i would switch.

I will be changing over from Vista to Win 7 on my desktop, but not my netbook that runs in my rig. Boot times would be a little longer.

With an OCZ Vector SSD in my netbook it boots quicker than my Intel Quad Core Extreme (@ 3.2 ghz, 2x 500gb HDDs in RAID 0) could ever boot. It only takes seconds. I'd compare it to that desktop coming out of hibernation.

At work, I have all of our systems still running XP. We will be jumping past Vista to 7 when the time comes.

Windows 7 has been working well for me. I just made the switch on my laptop. I had Vista running great on my laptop, to the point I liked it better than XP. Anyways yes for 30 I would switch to 7.

My only problems with it thus far have been that there is no classic start menu option. I can't stand the xp/vista/7 start menu I find the classic one easier, but that’s personal, and I found a third party program that fixes it. I also find the new "superbar" very annoying and difficult, the superbar basically replaces quicklaunch and puts it on steroids but in my opinion I see the side effects. Again a personal opinion and again I found a way around it to bring it back to normal.

Other than that It runs like a champ, boots up much faster than xp or vista and utilizes resources quite well I have noticed, and I have barley started tweaking it, so I only see my potential from it.

All in all, switch to 7 it’s a good OS.

Is the super bar basically OSX's Dock?

Complaints I've heard about Windows 7 so far is: Random CHKDSK at boot up on multiple systems that powered down properly each time. One report of the OS eating itself where it would no longer boot up and the data was gone from the disk. That system was reloaded and has been running fine with no hardware swaps. Reports were from different sites with different users that don't interact with each other so they're not likely sharing a common virus. I'd still consider it an improvement over Vista.

We've upgraded 4 laptops from Vista to 7 RTM at work a couple weeks ago. Zero problems with 7 so far. 7 works better than Vista on these systems, quicker boot and shutdown, with less OS memory overhead.

Definitely make the switch. Windows 7 is going to be the new Netbook OS of choice other than Linux of course. Think of Windows 7 as a polished version of XP. Vista doesn't compare.

My free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate will be here tomorrow or Friday.
