You can if you're a licensed vacuum cleaner salesman.

Funny comments aside, I have a Rice trailer. Not that one, just a regular flatbed, but its very nice construction, a major step up from the junk they sell at antique auto/usa trailer. Got it from Forbes Trailer in waterford, good people there.

You only don't need DOT numbers when you are using it for recreation. Whenever you are using it for pay, you are considered commercial.

The only time you need DOT numbers is if you are hauling in the support of a business or in the process of making money. If you are strictly hauling your OWN vehicles or belongings, you are non-commercial and do not fall under DOT commercial jurisdiction. However, if you are hauling for a "buddy" you can be labeled as commercial even if he is buying your lunch, paying for fuel, etc... If you get the right DOT cop, you better have a very convincing story, or a checkbook.

The first time you get in an accident, you are going to be fucked. I have a 37' car hauler, a 1-ton Dodge, and do not haul commercially. My personal car insurance will cover me, my trailer, and any of my vehicles that are on the trailer. But, if I am hauling any other vehicle that belongs to someone else, my insurance will NOT cover it. So, if you have an accident, hauling a vehicle for money for someone that hired you, you are likely going to get bent over by the judge. But, I am sure that nobody would ever sue you or write you a ticket for not following the DOT regulations...

ive been stopped before and warned when hauling horse trailers. dot guys do not care. they want to write tickets. as stated above any money in your favor will need to be dot numbers. also i was warned about being of the 10k limit which i clearly was. not everyone is over that 10k limit. but most with deisels and a goosenecks are. we now have the numbers on the farm truck.

Hauling horses normally would fall under DOT regulation. If you are hauling horses to a horse show where you have the chance of winning cash or goods, you are legally defined as commercial and need DOT numbers and a CDL. The same goes for the weekend drag racers, rock crawlers competing, etc... If you are towing something that will be used in an effort to make money, or earn something with monetary value, you are commercial. Unless you were hauling your own horse to go trail riding, you probably fell under commercial regs...

First, you're going to have to register your company. Then you're going to need business insurance. Then you're going to do this:
