Default Prop problem??

Ok so i am new to owning a boat, my dad has had boats all my life but i just bought my first boat last week and had it out today and doesnt seem right i think its a prop problem

here it goes.

on the boat when i got it it had a 19pitch prop and those little dolphins on the outdrive... it takes quite awhile to plane and seems like it will run way too high of rpm. if i let it go wide open throttle it would go all the way to 5500 or maybe even above just didnt want to try and only doing 32 mph gps... also i pretty much had to keep the trim all the way down otherwise the rpm would get too high

my dad gave me a 23p mirage stainless steel prop do you think i will even be able to plane with this since i had trouble planing a 19p?

the boat is an 86 cobalt with 5.7v8 260 and alpha one seems to me it should do faster than 32

any suggestions?

Read through this Michigan Wheel Catalog. It will give you an idea of where you should be with a prop. It may still take testing a couple to get you in the right RPM range.

Something else you can look into is Smart Tabs http://www.nauticusinc.com/

it came with a 19pitch but if i would let it rev out it would go all the way to 6k rpm i bet

and only hitting 32 mph with this setup seems way to slow

Sounds like the prop your dad have you is a step in the right direction unless there is a problem elsewhere.

Post up the results.

i put the 23 pitch on and am a lot happier with that than the 19p... i had 9 people and a full tank of gas and gps'ed at 40 in pretty rough water so about a lil more than 4k rpm im thinking if i can find a good 21p i will be good because the 23 took awhile to plane

Yeah, 23p is a little much for a small block. 21p sounds like it would work well for you. You forgot to mention prop size though, because different diameters make a difference in plane time and rpms as well.
