The inserts are different between the two. The 8 bolt have the magnesium ones and the 12 have big ass rubber inserts. The mag ones are easier to cut down I've heard than the rubber and the rubber ones are harder to get into the tire when assembling. The runflats are very necessary and the only reason to deal with a hummer wheel. They're what gives it the dual beadlock when clamped together. I have a thread about recentering them if you search for it. The pics should still be up on it.

I've read that with 12 bolts you don't have issues running a radial tire, however with the 8 bolts the studs rip out of the wheel or something

I mounted up my 42x15 pitbulls with no problems, just need to finish the damn thing so I can test them out!!

Not sure you could rip out a stud? I think it would strip first or something. But yes, the 12 bolt versions are what the military used for the radial tired rigs.
