Default 96 Explorer... Problems And Questions

First off im a jeep guy!

One of my buddys had a 96' explorer just sitting in his feild for 2 years and i finally asked him if i could buy it... So after 200 bucks and all new fluid it runs great and drives fine. But is absolutely gutless compared to my jeep 4.0

My first question is what type of tcase do these things have? Its a XLT and says something about the 4wd on the back badge. Is is 2WD or AWD? I See the knob says 2wd, 4LOW, and 4HI....

Also My buddy told me that there was something wrong with the front pinion, i guess hes fixed something around the front pinion a couple times so he stopped driving it...

So my second question is, is their some kind of common problem with this pinion deal?

Thanks guys

it has a BW 1354 E t case. E for electric shift.

most common in the front axle is pinion seals, and outer end seals. it has a dana 35 front and is pretty tough. if the seals have been replaced and are still leaking i would check for a plugged breather vent.

sounds like a good investment/
