Leave Vista on there. It really doesn't suck like people say it does. I have been running it for 2 years at home and have had zero problems. It actually kicked ass when I changed motherboards and didn't have to reinstall.

IMO, Vista still sucks, but it's not worth $170 for the downgrade. Vista became a lot better after I got a modern CPU. I'm used to it now, but it took a while to get used to this much suck.

I hate vista. I have it on my home computer and it is so much different than the other "standard" windows that I use here at work.

Vista doesn't have to suck.. I was one of the most avid supporters of XP, and hated Vista with a passion. When I got my new laptop with Vista on it, I decided I'd leave it on and see how it went. I tweaked it until and it ran better than any XP box I have ever had.

The problem with Vista, is it comes with EVERYTHING turned on, which means its really pretty, but its working way to hard just to support itself. I personally like a clean and simple OS without any flashy shiny buttons... or Aero as they call it, so I turned everything off and it looks nearly identical to XP, except the folders are somewhat different. I even went so far to change all the Vista sounds to be XP's.

All in all I am happy with it, had it a year now and haven't reloaded it with XP.

If you get Vista, just turn off the fancy stuff, and it will run great, arguably better then XP. Not worth the 170 for XP.

Most importantly turn off UAC, that's the security agent that ask you 5 times over whether or not you really want to do what you're doing. Although some people leave it on thinking that just because it prompts them to say yes or no and they still say yes every time, that it will somehow protect them better.

Good luck on the choice!

If you can get your hands on an XP install disc I'm pretty sure Microsoft will give you an activation key to downgrade.

http://www.eetasia.com/ART_880050531...P_52fdda11.HTM
Quote:
You can get the activation key from Microsoft. All volume-licensed versions of Vista, along with retail and OEM versions of Vista Business and Vista Ultimate, come with downgrade rights. That means you're entitled to an XP activation key from Microsoft or your PC maker. (Interestingly, you can downgrade even further if you wish: The license also entitles you to Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, or even Windows 95.)

I like vista now that I was able to figure out the location of everything. I also finally go it tweaked so every program doesn’t need permission. Most of my programs now are vista compatible so I can’t complain. My main problem is networking these things are a pain.

Vista still sucks in my opinion. Wait until october and buy windows 7 instead. I think even microsoft knows it sucks if they are pushing out a new version of windows allready.

We will be lucky to see 7 by oct of 2010. Just because their "anticipated release" is Oct 2009, don't count on it. Microsoft hasn't went through and did all of their Windows 7 Technet Events, like they do the summer before the full release of a product.

Has anyone installed the release candidate yet?

I don't hate vista, but I definitely would NOT pay an extra 170 for XP

I have, and am using it right now. It is noticeably faster than vista, especially for bootups. I like it a lot.

If you're gonna be buying this computer from Best Buy and can wait two weeks, then wait. All computers purchased AFTER June 26th will be receiving Windows 7 for free when it is released.

We hated it at first, but almost 2 years later it has been really stable on the GF's laptop.

Im still running XP, and its still just as good as its always been.
