Default Project MRT 96 Dakota, SAS, 35's, now with a HEMI!!!

This is my truck, ive had it for 6 years now. It is the only vehicle I have ever owned, except my boat. I started building it as soon as I got it. Started with random dumb stuff, had a 3 inch body lift at one time. THen I got older, learned a lot after spending about 2 years on pirate4x4.com and got more serious about my build.

This was the truck a long time ago, I started with a leaf sprung dana 44 SAS as my first serious build for it.

For some reason I always have to do work next to my brothers baby, an 05 or 04 SRT-4 he bought brand new. Anyway, this is the last pic of the truck on IFS, I think in '05.

And after the swap was done

Replaced the rear no problem with a 9 inch in a day

All that finished

Put on some bald 35 inch dunlops I bought on ebay for $175. I liked the black wheels, I think Im going to paint my AR-23's black. The shiny aluminum doesnt match my plain truck

After that, I went thru every type of suspension I can think of except 1/4 eliptical. I had 2 different leaf spring setups, then radius arms and semi truck air bags,

then put in 14 inch eibach coil springs. pulled the upper arm on the radius setup and put in an upper making a short arm 3 link. Then built a long arm 3 link with the lowers 3 feet long and 2.0 OD .250 wall DOM, Ive had those riding on the coils the entire time. Now im replacing that setup with a pair of 14 inch travel 2.0 FOA coilovers.

This is now called project MRT, or Mighty Race Truck as one of my co-workers named it. I always said it didnt have the balls to be named that. Well that is in the process of changing now since I just pulled the tired old 3.9 v6 and am finishing up my 5.7 Hemi install. I have an '05 setup with the 545rfe trans and am using a dana 300 with an aluminum flip ring I made myself.

The v6 on its way out on 3-24

Started stabbing the Hemi in the next day

It starts now, but dies twice and wont run after due to having a j yard computer that just so happened to have the security system that needs a chipped key that I dont have. So, I have another computer on the way from Squire Automotive that is sure to work. Im hoping to get that saturday and Ill be finishing up the front suspension until then. You can check my photobucket, I have a ton of other pics on there of the truck if you want to see more of the Hemi install. http://s57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...dak/?start=all Ill update this when I get more work done.

After the most stressful day of the build, waiting until 5:45 for the UPS dude to get here with my new computer, the truck still wouldnt run. I literally started to freak out, I didnt speak for a few hours, then asked my brother for help. He is a master mechanic (handy). Anyway, the harness I got just wanted more wires. With another 2 wires with a switched 12 volt source, it fired up at 11:55 and actually stayed running! It revs up and sounds sooo badass. It has a sweet muscle car rough idle rite now which I know will smooth out as the computer learns its systems, but im just crazy excited rite now. I have a dvd camcorder that Ill take a video with and see if I can post it on youtube because I need to show off. BTW the numbers on this by my estimation are 400-410hp and 450ft/lb

From the factory, they are rated at 345. That is actually not true, they are not even 345ci like advertised. That was all done because the first car to have the same ci/hp was 345/345 back in the 50's, I forget exactly what it was, but dodge decided to list it like that. They are just under 350ci iirc and around 360 for hp. I have a book that is all about the midern Hemi, I forget who wrote it and its outside rite now. But he did a few upgrades to the 5.7 in there, intake, exhaust and under drive pulley. The stock intake is a big resonator designed to reduce noise=less power. I dont have the pulley yet, but I will soon, im just not modifing the setup yet because I have a warranty on them still. Anyway, if you uncork the intake and exhaust, you get about 35-40hp and the pulley is good for 10-15. As you can see, my intake is short and has pretty much no restriction and my exhaust is 2 inch into 3 inch all mandrel bent and as straight as possible with a high flow cat and sweet magnaflow muffler.

Edit-Allpar lists the bore as 3.92 and a stroke of 3.58 for the 5.7 which is 345 and some change, but the book had a larger bore listed

Well I finally went for a test drive where everything worked like it should. The trans was in 'limp-in' mode giving me only 2nd gear and reverse. Went to a dealership where my brother used to work and had them scan the comp to see why. The harness I bought was not done properly and the trans needed another 2 battery leads with a relay so now it goes, shifts and roars! I damn near need a neck brace with it downshifts at about 20mph. Now I have to get my gauges working, the oil pressure works, just got the temp gauge to work today, volts works fine, but i still have no speedo or tach. I used a dana 300 with the speedo in the tailshaft and just put mine in there, but it give me nothing. I only noticed it jump to about 30mph when I was slowing down a few times.

if you didnt change any hard parts on the engine like a cam, pistons, heads, etc. you do not have 400hp or 450 ft-lbs of torque, sorry, a stock hemi is not that powerful.... they put 240 or so to the tires in a stock truck. if you really want to know what it has for power or what you can get you should ask dline, he has turned a couple nobs on his 1/2 ton ram. I'd even throw a few hundo at a race between your 400hp engine and his 400hp engine.

rotate your trans cooler 90 degrees, it will probably trap a fair amount of air how you have it now... if nothing else, flip it over so the fittings are at the top so air can escape easier.

Progress looks good, it should be well worth it in the end.

Geo, im so relieved that you like what ive done. jk dude, ive been watchin you badass build, that thing will be sweet. I wish I could go for Hi-9's too

Seriously tho, I mounted the cooler that way because the instructions said to, I dont have room on the rad to turn it 90 tho. Ill keep an eye on it tho and flip it 180 if needed. Im looking for another small fan to mount on the cooler since the other one does nothing for it. But the stock rad keeps the hemi nice and cool all the time. Thanks. All I can say for the power is that is what the book showed for results, and it spins the tires when I stab the gas at about 15 and I downshift. It mite not be 400+ like you say, but its not a drag racer anyway and its for sure enough power for me. I just wanted it because it is modern, more effecient and gets better gas mileage than the old v6. The double power is just a nice side effect from the new setup

Being on the trans cooler subject, does anyone know which line is in and out from the trans to the cooler? Im looking to mount the sensor for the trans temp in one of those lines, but im not sure which one to use or which one I should use
