Default Legal issues using a trailrig in Alpena

Hey,i just sold my jeep and i am thinking about picking up a trail rig.I would only use it on orv, private and state land.Do i need to have it licensed, insured, and an orv sticker? Or can i just get an orv sticker and drive it on the shoulder of the road to the trails? Trav

So what are the actual laws? Can i get an orv sticker, license plate, and put a orange triangle on it and keep it under 35mph on the shoulder of the road without having to get insurance? Or do i need plates, insurance, and orv sticker?

You would not need anything if it were used on private land or private parks.

To be used in State/Federal/County parks you would only need an ORV sticker.

To be used on ORV trails and routes, you would only need an ORV sticker.

Not sure if the ORV on the shoulder laws apply to a full size vehicle. Might have a problem there without an SOS plate. But I am not sure. Check with your local PD and DNR.

I looked up the MI law on this a while ago. IIRC it was any vehicle that has a top speed of 35mph or less as it designed from the factory is required to have a SMV emblem. (orange triangle). I know of a few cases where a orange triangle has fooled a few leo's, but in reading the law I don't think it is legal for a modified truck to use it.

I don't doubt it. My friend took his deuce downtown and got pulled over by a city cop. no plates no insurance. told him it was an offroad truck and he had his triangle. The cop thought about it and said yeah I guess so and left.

I have triangles on 2 of my 6x6's.

If the vehicle can be plated it needs to be plated on the road. A tractor does not have a license plate/ it gets the orange triangle. This is not to say that some officers may look the other way if you have it a truck but it does not make it legal. A truck with an ORV sticker means jack shit (maybe no plate just sticker at the dunes?) but other than that the vehicle must have a plate/insurance on it.
