Default New Member: 85' F150 4WD with 300-6 and 4 speed, need trans. help!!

Good morning.

I recently purchased a 1985 Ford F-150 4WD with 4 speed manual trans.

I am having an issue where the shifter forks or shifter is locked up.

The truck is currently stuck in third gear.

I want to fix this problem right, but the truck is currently outside and facing a snow bank. I will have to roll it down the hill to get to a garage.

Where do I fill the manual transmission with gear oil?

How do I check the trans fluid?

Where do I get parts?

Thank you for any assistance.

You are appreciated.

Semper Fi,

pull the upper plug out of the side of the trans, stick your finger in, the fluid should be just at the bottom of the hole or slightly lower.

if low just squirt some gear oil in.

if you want to swap fluid, drain by removing the lower plug first.

I doubt this will solve the problem you are facing though.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the drain plug and fill location.

It has been a long time since I have danced this dance.

My back is not what it once was, so it is difficult for me to lay down in the slush under the truck and remember what I was going to do before I put myself there.

Any advice on being stuck in third gear?

Question

...any advice for a 1985 Ford F150 300-6 w/ four speed manual 4X4 that is locked into third gear?

I hope to have some time this weekend to repair it.

I would pull the shifter and the top cover off the trans and look down inside to see what is going on. and go from there

IIRC, there is a nylon bushing on the end of the shifter that wears out, and then the shifter can slide past one of the shift forks, locking it in gear...pull the shifter off, use a large screwdriver to re-align the shift forks, replace bushing, reinstall shifter...

but its been quite a while since I played with that problem, I may be thinking of something else...

*edit....BTW, thank you for enlisting to protect our freedoms

yeah x2 on the shifter linkages. Both of our 6-cyl E150's had those transmissions. I would always shoot some lube at the linkage or it would start to freeze up over time. You should be able to rotate the tabs at the trans with a small wrench or ratchet with no load on the trans. If they don't want to move then you are going to have to look inside or pull it out to diagnose further.

Wink

I had the pleasure of training towel heads and other folks who come from similar situations.

I try not to shoot them.

I want to train them to shoot their foreign and domestic enemies who try to use their common issues and religions to subjugate the free population.

I would like our country to be able to leave there someday.

I am optimistic.

We have been in Europe and Asia for more than 65 years now.
